Purpose
This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing nurses’ intention to stay after coming back from parental leave.
Methods
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The participants were 175 female nurses working in hospitals with over 300 beds and returning after three months of parental leave. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression.
Results
There were significant differences in intention to stay by age (t=2.65, p<.001) and position (t=-2.23, p=.027). Intention to stay was positively correlated with social support (r=.24, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=.42, p<.001), and negatively correlated with work-family balance conflict (r=-.21, p=.004). Factors influencing intention to stay were self-efficacy (β=.94, p<.001) and work-family balance conflict (β=-.49, p=.005), with an explanatory power of 20%.
Conclusion
The findings allow for proposing that increasing nurses’ intention to stay may require self-efficacy improvements to enable nurses to adjust to their work environment, and hospitals should provide nurses with institutional support in order to reduce nurses’ work-family conflicts.

Yi-Rang Jeong, Taewha Lee
J Korean Acad Nurs Adm 2020;26(4):331-339.   Published online September 30, 2020
DOI: https://doi.org/10.11111/jkana.2020.26.4.331
Purpose
This was a descriptive study aimed at providing basic data on readaptation of hospital nurses after parental leave by exploring levels of parenting stress, co-worker support, and work-life balance and identifying factors affecting work-life balance.
Methods
A survey using a convenience sampling was conducted with 86 nurses who were within their first year reinstatement after parental leave. Structured questionnaires were used, including the above named main variables and other general characteristics. Data were collected from February to May, 2019 from three tertiary hospitals in Seoul. Data were statistically analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis.
Results
Work-life balance showed a statistical difference depending on the level of education; it showed negative correlations with commuting time and fatigue and positive correlations with the attitude to job rotation, health status, and quality of sleep. There was a negative correlation between parenting stress and work-life balance and a positive correlation between co-worker support and work-life balance. Work-life balance was influenced by fatigue, parenting stress, health status, and co-worker support in the regression model.
Conclusion
Parenting stress, co-worker support, health status and fatigue of nurses reinstated from parental leave should be improved to enhance their work-life balance.

Influence of Awareness and Perceived Ease in Using Parental Leave on Job Satisfaction of Nurses in a Public Hospital
Kyung Suk Jang, Yeo Jin Yi
J Korean Acad Nurs Adm 2018;24(3):211-220.   Published online June 30, 2018
DOI: https://doi.org/10.11111/jkana.2018.24.3.211
PURPOSE
The aim of this study was to identify whether awareness and perceived ease in using parental leave influence job satisfaction of nurses in a public hospital.
METHODS
The participants were 425 nurses working in a public hospital. A questionnaire was used to collect data from October 12 to October 25, 2016. The influence of the factors on job satisfaction of nurses was analyzed by multiple hierarchical regression.
RESULTS
Nurses taking leave accounted for 46.8% (75 nurses) of 160 married nurses. They worried about adaptation after return to work (30.7%) and complained about disadvantages related to using parental leave (45.3%). The percentage of nurses on leave replaced by new full time nurses was 70.7%. Nurses' awareness (β=.16) of perceived ease of using parental leave (β=.32) influenced the nurses' job satisfaction (R2=.21).
CONCLUSION
To improve job satisfaction for nurses, it is necessary to increase awareness and perceived ease of using parental leave. Public hospitals should replace nurses on leave with temporary nurses and help returning nurses adapt to their jobs as they return to work. Nursing managers should create a healthy climate in which it is easy for nurses to take parental leave.

PURPOSE
This was a correlational study to identify effects of perception of clinical ladder system on job satisfaction and intention to leave in perioperative nurses.
METHODS
Participants were 154 of perioperative nurses from larger general hospitals in Seoul. Data were collected from April, 16 to 22, 2013 using self-report questionnaires which included items on perception of clinical ladder system, job satisfaction, and intention to leave. Data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe? test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise regression.
RESULTS
The average mean score for perception of clinical ladder system was midline at 2.69 point out of 4 point. Perception of clinical ladder system correlated positively with job satisfaction (r=.38, p<.01) and negatively with intention to leave (r=-.88, p<.01). Perception of clinical ladder system was the factor which most influenced job satisfaction explaining 17.1% of the variance, also perception of clinical ladder system was the factor which most influenced intention to leave, explaining 12.7% of the variance.
CONCLUSION
Results of this study suggest that there is a need to enhance the perception of the clinical ladder system and to find ways to fulfill the expected effects for improving perioperative nurses' job satisfaction and reducing the intention to leave.

PURPOSE
To evaluate the relationship between organizational socialization and intention to leave, and to identify factors affecting on intention to leave in operating room nurses.
METHODS
This study used a descriptive design. Seventy operating room nurses recruited from three hospitals under the same management style, in-service educational system, and working conditions agreed to participate in this study, and completed self-administered questionnaires of the organizational socialization and the intention to leave questionnaire. Respondents were classified by career as advanced beginner, competent practitioner, proficient practitioner and expert practitioner by Benner's stages of nursing proficiency. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA with multiple comparisons, Spearman correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
RESULTS
Nurses unsatisfied with the current in-service continuous education had lower organizational socialization and higher intention to leave. In advanced beginners, job performance was lowest and organizational commitment was highest. In expert practitioners, intention to leave was highest. Organizational commitment, interpersonal relationship, identity and burnout were associated with intention to leave. Mutual trust, burnout, and interpersonal relationship were predictors of intention to leave explained 20.8% of variance.
CONCLUSION
The career ladder program to enhance nurses' organizational socialization and intention to stay should be established and expanded for well-experienced operating room nurses.

Influence of Emotional Labor on Job Satisfaction, Intent to Leave, and Nursing Performance of Clinical Nurses
Sun Mee Wi, Yeo Jin Yi
J Korean Acad Nurs Adm 2012;18(3):310-319.   Published online September 30, 2012
DOI: https://doi.org/10.11111/jkana.2012.18.3.310
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to analyze emotional labor factors influencing job satisfaction, intent to leave, and nursing performance of clinical nurses.
METHOD
The participants were 384 clinical nurses working in a hospital. Study design was cross sectional survey. Subcategories of emotional labor (frequency of emotional labor, attentiveness of emotional display, mismatch of emotions) of emotional labor were dependent variables. Job satisfaction, intent to leave, and nursing performance were independent variables. Data were analyzed by hierarchial multiple regression.
RESULTS
The strength of emotional labor of nurses was similar for all participants in spite of differences in age, position, and clinical career. Total score for emotional labor was 3.21, frequency of emotional labor 3.34, attentiveness of emotional display 3.41, and mismatch of emotions 2.87. Mismatch of emotions influenced job satisfaction (F=12.53, p<.001) R2 27%, intent to leave (F=8.51, p<.001) R2 19%, and nursing performance (F=5.80, p<.001) R2 15%, CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that the factor (mismatch of emotion) is an important variable for clinical nurses in human resource management. Therefore, nurse managers should consider this factor for the improvement of organizational effectiveness.
