Research and publication ethics

Ethical Charter

The Korean Academy of Nursing Administration is an academic organization dedicated to advancing education, research, and practice in the field of nursing administration, promoting scholarly exchange with domestic and international academic communities, and supporting the academic activities of its members, with the ultimate goal of improving human health and well-being.

Members of the Korean Academy of Nursing Administration (hereinafter referred to as “Members”) shall uphold the following ethical principles:

  • 1. Members have the fundamental right to academic freedom.
  • 2. Members shall maintain fairness and openness toward scholarly achievements regardless of differences in ideology, religion, age, gender, social class, or culture.
  • 3. Members shall respect the human rights of research participants and research assistants involved in scholarly activities.
  • 4. Members shall report nursing knowledge and research findings accurately and truthfully.
  • 5. Members shall acknowledge errors when credible evidence contradicting their claims is identified.
  • 6. Members shall evaluate the scholarly work of others fairly and impartially.
  • 7. Members shall remain open-minded toward new research questions, perspectives, and methodologies.
  • 8. Members shall manage research funds in a transparent and fair manner.
  • 9. Members shall comply with applicable laws, the ethical policies of the Academy, and generally accepted standards of research integrity.

1. General Provisions

1.1 Purpose

This policy establishes ethical standards governing academic activities conducted under the auspices of the Korean Academy of Nursing Administration, including research, publication, and scholarly presentation.

1.2 Scope

This policy applies to all members of the Korean Academy of Nursing Administration and to all academic activities, projects, and participants affiliated with or sponsored by the Academy.

2. Research Ethics

2.1 Principles of Research Integrity

Members shall adhere to accepted standards of research integrity throughout the planning, conduct, publication, and presentation of research.
Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • • Fabrication
  • • Falsification
  • • Plagiarism
  • • Inappropriate authorship attribution
  • • Redundant or duplicate publication
  • • Obstruction of investigations into research misconduct
  • • Other practices that seriously deviate from accepted standards in nursing scholarship

Improper research conduct also includes:

  • • Concealing, assisting, or tolerating misconduct
  • • Improper acquisition of research data
  • • False representation of academic credentials, qualifications, or research achievements
  • • Other conduct deemed inappropriate by the Ethics and Legal Affairs Committee

2.2 Research Personnel

Members shall respect the dignity and rights of all research personnel, including researchers, graduate students, and research assistants, and provide fair recognition and treatment commensurate with their contributions.

2.3 Protection of Human and Animal Subjects

Research involving human participants must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki and receive approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Research involving animals must receive approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and comply with institutional ethical standards.
Special protections shall be provided for vulnerable populations, including patients and students. Participation refusal shall not result in disadvantage. Where participation is linked to academic credit, alternative activities must be offered.

2.4 Research Funding

Members shall:

  • • Conduct research independently and responsibly;
  • • Manage research funds transparently in accordance with institutional regulations; and
  • • Acknowledge funding sources in all publications and presentations arising from funded research.

3. Publication Ethics

3.1 General Principles

All published scholarly work must be original. Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to uphold the highest standards of publication integrity.

3.2 Use of Generative AI

Authors who use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the preparation of manuscripts shall do so transparently and responsibly. Authors shall disclose such use. AI tools shall not be listed as authors. Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all submitted content.

3.3 Data Sharing and Transparency

Authors shall support transparency and reproducibility by providing information on data availability, where applicable, in accordance with ethical, legal, and privacy requirements. When data cannot be shared, the reasons shall be clearly stated.

3.4 Responsibilities of Authors

Authors shall:

  • 1. Conduct and report research honestly, transparently, and accurately;
  • 2. Comply with the authorship criteria established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE);
  • 3. Follow the journal’s submission guidelines;
  • 4. Obtain all necessary permissions prior to submission;
  • 5. Ensure that publication does not infringe upon contractual or ownership rights.

Authorship shall be granted only to individuals who meet all of the following criteria:

  • • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  • • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  • • Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  • • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved Individuals not meeting all criteria shall be acknowledged as contributors.

3.5 Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers shall:

  • 1. Complete manuscript reviews within the designated timeframe;
  • 2. Evaluate submissions fairly, objectively, and without personal bias;
  • 3. Respect authors’ dignity and independence;
  • 4. Maintain confidentiality regarding submitted manuscripts;
  • 5. Report suspected ethical concerns or misconduct to the Editor-in-Chief.

3.6 Responsibilities of Editorial Members

Editorial members shall:

  • 1. Evaluate manuscripts solely on academic merit and compliance with submission guidelines;
  • 2. Maintain confidentiality of information obtained during peer review;
  • 3. Refrain from using unpublished manuscript content without author permission;
  • 4. Monitor and address unethical conduct by authors or reviewers.

4. Conference Presentation Ethics

Material presented in oral or poster format at conferences organized by the Academy must not have been previously presented at another national academic conference.
If conference proceedings are published in a scholarly journal, the material must not have been previously published in the Academy’s journal.

5. Ethics and Legal Affairs Committee

5.1 Establishment

The Academy shall maintain an Ethics and Legal Affairs Committee to oversee compliance with this policy and adjudicate matters related to research misconduct.

5.2 Composition

The Committee shall consist of 8–12 members appointed by the President of the Academy, including the Vice President and Director of Publication.
The Vice President shall serve as Chair.
Committee members shall serve two-year terms.

5.3 Responsibilities

The Committee shall:

  • • Promote awareness of research ethics;
  • • Review alleged ethical violations;
  • • Propose amendments to ethics policies;
  • • Perform other duties as assigned.

5.4 Review Procedures

The Committee may:

  • • Convene meetings to review allegations of misconduct;
  • • Request statements or materials from relevant parties;
  • • Consult external experts where necessary;
  • • Provide involved parties an opportunity to respond before final decisions are made.

5.5 Sanctions

Where misconduct is confirmed, the Committee may impose sanctions including:

  • • Written warning;
  • • Suspension of membership;
  • • Notification of affiliated institutions.

Membership suspension may include restrictions of up to five years regarding:

  • • Publication in the Academy’s journal;
  • • Participation in Academy activities;
  • • Other rights and privileges of membership.

Supplementary Provisions

Effective Date
This policy shall take effect upon approval by the Executive Board.

Applicability
As a general rule, this policy applies only to papers published on or after May 18, 2018.

Governing Rules
Any matters not specified herein shall be governed by the bylaws and regulations of the Korean Academy of Nursing Administration.
