PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate provide basic data for improving patient safety in nursing homes in Korea by measuring the patient safety culture of nursing homes and understanding its influencing factors. METHODS This study is a secondary analysis of a descriptive research study using data from development and validation of the Korean patient safety culture scale for nursing homes. A total of 982 cases were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 20 program. RESULTS For the safety culture of the patient, there was a significant difference based on the size and location of the facility. For the degree of patient safety, age, education, occupation, marital status, and the size of the nursing home were significant factors. Patient safety culture and the degree of patient safety had a positive correlation. The regression model of the degree of patient safety was significant (F=20.73, p<.001) and the explanatory power of the model was 27.4%. CONCLUSION The study results indicate that patient safety culture is a factor influencing safety of elders in nursing homes. To improve patient safety for nursing homes in Korea, continuous evaluation and improvement projects need to be done at a national level.

PURPOSE This methodological study was done to develop a Nursing Competency Measurement Scale based on the clinical ladders of nurses working in wards. METHODS Thirty clinical experts and 501 ward nurses evaluated the content validity of the scale. A survey using the Nursing Competency Measurement Scale was conducted with 114 nurses to evaluate reliability and applicability of the instrument. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0. RESULTS A review of the literature identified 13 components of nursing competencies and 30 core nursing competencies based on each of the 4 grade clinical ladders. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total was .92. Cronbach's alpha reliabilities of each clinical ladder grade were .83 for Grade I, .84 for Grade II, .81 for Grade III, and .84 for Grade IV. The Content Validity Index (CVI) of the scale with 120 individual items was 0.976~1.000 for Grade I scale, 0.986~1.000 for Grade II scale, 0.984~1.000 for Grade III scale, and 0.992~1.000 for Grade IV scale. The expert group nurses' average degree of nursing competence measured using the scale was 3.38~3.75 out of 4.0. CONCLUSION Through this process, 120 final questions were confirmed to represent items of the Nursing Competency Measurement Scale based on clinical grade.

PURPOSE This study was done to identify the effects of Type D personality on compassion fatigue, burnout, compassion satisfaction, and job stress in clinical nurses. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 172 clinical nurses working in two tertiary hospitals. The structured questionnaires included Type D personality scale, compassion fatigue, burnout, compassion satisfaction, and job stress scales. RESULTS About 79.7% of participants were classified as Type D personality group. The Type D personality was not related to general characteristics of clinical nurses. The Type D personality group showed statistically significant higher compassion fatigue, burnout, and job stress and lower compassion satisfaction compared to the non-Type D personality group. In addition, compassion fatigue and burnout were positively correlated with job stress and compassion fatigue was positively correlated with burnout. However, compassion satisfaction was negatively correlated with burnout. CONCLUSION As the prevalence of Type D personality is high in clinical nurses, it is necessary to assess stress-related personality. In addition, management for the nurse with Type D personality is required to alleviate compassion fatigue, burnout, and job stress and to improve compassion satisfaction.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify employment experiences of nurses caring for hospitalized foreign patients. METHODS For this study, 10 nurses caring for foreign patients for more than 6 months were chosen purposively. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews from July to September 2013 and analyzed in terms of Giorgi's phenomenological methodology. RESULTS Five themes-clusters were identified from fifteen themes; 1) Awesome challenges; 2) Laborious dealing with barriers; 3) Acceptance of cultural differences; 4) Complete concentration of personal energy; 5) Taking a powerful step towards tomorrow. CONCLUSION Results of this study reveal the significance of nurses' experiences in caring for foreign patients for the first time in Korea. The following are suggested: First, facilitation and training is necessary for language proficiency, communication skills and ability to understand cultural traits of foreign patients. Second, manuals and international guidelines for caring for foreign patients should be systematically developed to improve quality of healthcare services.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect reality shock in new nurses. METHODS Participants were 216 newly graduated nurses with less than 1 year experience in 5 university and 10 general hospitals in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam, A self-report questionnaire was completed by the nurses between November 18 and December 25, 2013. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and hierarchial multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 Program. RESULTS Average scores for work environment and environmental reality shock were 2.63+/-0.33 and 2.66+/-0.43 points respectively. Regression analysis showed that with the nurses' demographic and work characteristics controlled, work environment explained 4.2% of the reality shock. Factors significantly affecting reality shock included nurses' changing residence because of job (beta=.21, p=.001), whether they were able to work on the unit of their choice (beta=-.13, p=.031) and whether they had a choice in days off (beta=-.14, p=.038). CONCLUSION When these factors are considered, reduction in nurses' reality shock requires improvement in work environment, placing new nurses in a department of their choice and allowing them a choice in off-duty days. These measures would also help achieve organizational goals and develop the new nurses as professional nurses.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the roles of empowerment and emotional intelligence in the relationship between job embeddedness and turnover intension among general hospital nurses. METHODS The sample for this study consisted of 224 nurses from four general hospitals of less than 500 beds located in Seoul and Gyunggi Province. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. RESULTS It was found that: (a) Job embeddedness and emotional intelligence had negative effects on turnover intension; (b) Emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between job embeddedness and turnover intension, but empowerment did not. CONCLUSION Findings indicate a need to reduce the degree of turnover by enhancing job embeddedness among general hospital nurses. Further research needs to be done to refine this study.

PURPOSE The purpose was to compare operating room (OR) nurses and general ward nurses on their communication competence and interpersonal relationship ability within the medical team. METHODS Participants were 276 nurses (OR 122, ward 154) working in one of 4 university hospitals located in I and K areas. Data were collected using a questionnaire and data collection was done in June, 2013. Comparisons between OR nurses and general ward nurses on communication competence and interpersonal relationship ability were analyzed using ANCOVA. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in communication competence (F=11.96, p=.001) with average score for OR nurses at 3.37 points and ward nurses at 3.53 points. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in interpersonal relationship ability (F=15.51, p<.001) with the average score for OR nurses at 3.30 points and ward nurses at 3.50 points. CONCLUSION The results indicate a need to develop a variety of programs to promote communication competence in OR nurses and to enhance the openness of interpersonal relationship ability in human resource management.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing job satisfaction in hospice nurses. The focus was on emotional labor and burnout. METHODS Between September 30 and October 18, 2013, hospice nurses (n=63) in 5 hospitals in 4 cities completed measures of emotional labor, burnout, and job satisfaction. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with the SPSS/Win 21.0 program. RESULTS The mean score per item for emotional labor was 3.0, the mean of burnout score was 2.7, and the mean job satisfaction score was 3.4. Emotional labor showed a positive correlation with burnout (r=.61), and a negative correlation with job satisfaction (r=-.52). Burnout showed a negative correlation with job satisfaction (r=-.64). The factors influencing job satisfaction were burnout (beta=-.65, p<.001) and clinical experience (beta=.25, p=.007). Burnout and clinical experience explained 57.0% of the variance in hospice nurses' job satisfaction. CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicate a need to develop strategies to prevent burnout and control emotional labor in order to increase job satisfaction for hospice nurses.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among turnover intention, emotional labor, and communication competence in nurses. METHODS The participants for this study were 297 nurses from three general hospitals in two local cites in Korea. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires from August 26 to September 10, 2013 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, One-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson Correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS The average scores for turnover intention, emotional labor, and communication competence respectively, were 3.45, 3.08, and 3.44 out of 5. The novices recognized that their emotional labor and turnover intention were significantly higher, and their communication competence was lower than other nurses. Nurses' turnover intention had a positive relationship with their emotional labor, but no relationship with communication competence. Job satisfaction, frequency of emotional expression, and emotional dissonance had an effect on nurses' turnover intention. CONCLUSION The results show that emotional labor and job satisfaction are very important factors affecting nurses' turnover intention. So, nurse managers should try to minimize nurses' emotional labor and maximize their job satisfaction by developing various human relationship educational and support programs and using them.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify how political interest, efficacy and media usage influence political participation in hospital nurses. METHODS Participants were 286 nurses, who were informed of the study purpose and agreed to participate. Data were collected during November and December, 2012 using a questionnaire on political interest, political efficacy, media usage and political participation. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients, and Multiple Stepwise Regression. RESULTS Scores for political participation and political interest was average. The score for political efficacy was higher than average. Political participation was significantly different by education level, job career, position, and intention to vote in the election for the 18th President. Political participation had a moderate positive correlation with political interest (r=.50, p<.001), political efficacy (r=.32, p<.001) and media usage (r=.14, p=.022). Political interest (beta=.43) was the factor most influential on political participation, explaining 25% of the variance. A total of 32% of political participation was explained by political interest, political efficacy, and TV news or SNS for media use. CONCLUSION The results suggest that it is necessary to develop strategies to promote political interest and political efficacy for hospital nurses to improve political participation.
