Relationship of Gender Role Conflict and Job Satisfaction to Turnover Intention for Men in Nursing

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between gender role conflict for men in nursing, job satisfaction, and turnover intention.
METHODS
The study data were collected between August 1 and September 1, 2015 from 225 men in nursing currently working in 36 Korean general hospitals, each with ≥100 beds. Frequency and percentages were analyzed, and Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's test were used.
RESULTS
There was no significant difference in gender role conflict based on the general characteristics of the men. In contrast, significant differences in gender role conflict were found in association with the following job-related characteristics: work experience at the present hospital, work department, work unit, and type of work. A significant negative correlation was detected between male gender role conflict and job satisfaction, a positive correlation was found between male gender role conflict and turnover intention.
CONCLUSION
In order to increase job satisfaction and decrease the turnover intention of men in nursing, measures to reduce gender role conflict are needed.

Nurses' Work-family Balance: The Gender Perspectives

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to explore the perspectives of gender and role in the family for nurses' work-family balance.
METHOD
Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 14 married nurses having children, who were selected through convenience sampling and purposive sampling from November 1, 2011 to January 20, 2012. The data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis.
RESULTS
The common themes resulted from data analysis included following traditional gender roles, giving up any expectation of spouse's role, coordinating the division of family roles, and refusing to stick to gender roles. The age of nurse, family background of husband, and social-economic contexts were essential to explain the couple dynamics.
CONCLUSIONS
Nurses who received private family support were stably leading a work-family balance, yet unable to change the gender structure of spouse for the work-family balance. On the other hand, young nurses who were unable to get any support, had a tendency of cooperating with their spouses and adopting more negotiable and pragmatic approach to work-family balance.

Study on Male Nurses' Gender Stereotype and Job Satisfaction

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to investigate gender stereotype and job satisfaction, and to identify the relationship between gender stereotype and job satisfaction in male nurses.
METHODS
The participants were 165 male nurses who worked in the Seoul, Gyeonggi and Daejeon areas. Data were collected from August 31th, 2009 to October 15th, 2009. A survey questionnaire was used to measure demographics, gender-role identity, gender stereotype and job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS/Win 12.0 version.
RESULTS
The mean score for gender stereotype was 2.81 points out of a possible 5. There were statistically significant differences in gender stereotype by general characteristics such as career in the current department (F=5.249, p=.007) and position (t=2.547, p=.012). The scores for gender stereotype were significantly higher in the group with less than five years in the current department and in the staff nurse group. The mean score for job satisfaction was 2.95 out of a possible 5. There was a significant negative correlation between gender stereotype and job satisfaction.
CONCLUSIONS
Development of educational programs is required to improve the gender stereotype.
