Purpose This study was done to investigate the mediating effect of trust in supervisor in the relationship between ethical leadership of nursing unit managers and job embeddedness of staff nurses.
Methods: Participants were 216 staff nurses from one tertiary general hospital and three general hospitals. Data were collected from June to August, 2018, using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Mann-whitney U test, One-way ANOVA, Kruskal-wallis, Welch test, Scheffé test, Games-Howell, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression, with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. A mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test.
Results: There were significant relationships between ethical leadership and trust in supervisor (r=.85, p<.001), ethical leadership and job embeddedness (r=.38, p<.001), and trust in supervisor and job embeddedness (r=.41, p<.001). Trust in supervisor showed full-mediating effects in the relationship between ethical leadership and job embeddedness.
Conclusion: The results of this research show the importance of the role of trust in the supervisor as a full mediating variable. To increase the nurses’ job embeddedness, it is necessary to develop programs and strategies to enhance trust in supervisors, as well as training nursing unit managers to provide ethical leadership.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effect of job embeddedness in the relationship between nursing practice environment on nursing job performance and organizational commitment. METHODS For this study a descriptive design with survey method was utilized. Participants were 192 clinical nurses recruited from 2 hospitals in A, B city and J province in Korea. From June, 6 to 24, 2018, a questionnaire scale was used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and liner regression analysis. RESULTS There were significant positive relationships for nursing job performance and organizational commitment with nursing practice environment. In addition, job embeddedness had a full mediating role in the relationship between nursing practice environment and nursing job performance, and a partial mediation effect in nursing practice environment and organizational commitment. CONCLUSION The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effects of job embeddedness and to find ways to improve organizational commitment, which is a useful variable to predict performance outcomes, nurse job performance and job behavior of organizational members. Also, the study results can be used as basic data for nursing manpower management strategies.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the importance, performance and rates of nurses' performance of nursing interventions in long-term care hospitals. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study was used and data were collected in 2015. Participants were 174 clinical nurses working in 14 long-term care hospitals. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0. RESULTS The nurses' perceived importance of nursing interventions was 4.48±0.51, and the degree of nursing intervention performance in long-term care hospitals was 3.97±1.07 out of 5. The rates of nursing interventions performed by nurses ranged from 33.9% to 99.4% with an average of 82.5%. There were statistically significant positive correlations among perceived importance, performance in hospitals, and rates for nurses' performance of nursing interventions (p<.001). CONCLUSION The results indicate that interventions with a high degree of importance and performance could be the core nursing interventions in long-term care hospitals. These core nursing interventions should be included in education for nurses. These findings can be used in developing realistic guidelines and effective strategies for nurses and administrators to improve the quality of nursing and the status of nursing professionals in long-term care hospitals.

PURPOSE This study was performed to identify the mediating effect of empowerment in the relationship between head nurses' servant leadership and organizational commitment among clinical nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 249 nurses was recruited from three hospitals located in J province, South Korea. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires, including general characteristics, servant leadership, empowerment, and organizational commitment. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and linear regression using the SPSS 22.0 program. RESULTS Head nurses' servant leadership perceived by clinical nurses significantly influenced their organization commitment. Empowerment partly mediated the effect of servant leadership on organizational commitment. CONCLUSION The findings suggest the importance of improving nurse managers' servant leadership and empowering nurses to increase their organizational commitment.

PURPOSE This study was done to identify the experiences of ethical issues and needs for ethics education in clinical nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was used and data were collected in 2013. Participants were 428 clinical nurses working in the general units of seven medical hospitals. The Ethical Issues in Clinical Practice Tool was used. Data analysis was performed using SPSS/WIN 19.0. RESULTS 'Providing care with a possible risk to your health' was the most frequent and disturbing ethical problems for nurses. The highest helpful ethical topic was 'the patients' right, autonomy and informed consent'. The ethical issue experience was significantly different according to education level, work units, and type of employment. The necessity of ethics education was statistically different according to age, religion, level of education, duration of working as RN, position, shift type, and continuing education about nursing ethics. CONCLUSION The results of this study show that nursing educators need to provide practical ethics education based on frequent ethical issues and helpful education topics. These findings can be used in developing effective education strategies for clinical nurses and nursing organizations to improve nurses' ethical decision-making abilities.

PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intention among male nurses in South Korea. METHODS Data were collected in May, 2013 and a total of 150 male hospital nurses participated in this study. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intention were measured using a structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 20.0 for windows. RESULTS There were statistically significant correlations between job satisfaction and organizational commitment (r=.74, p<.001), job satisfaction and turnover intention (r=-.56, p<.001), and organizational commitment and turnover intention (r=-.69, p< .001). There was a statistically significant difference in job satisfaction of participants according to education, work unit, and salary. Organizational commitment showed significant difference according to age, education, work unit, and salary. Turnover intention was significantly different according to duration of employment in the hospital, and salary. The most influential factor for turnover intention was organizational commitment (beta=-.69, p<.001). This factor accounted for 47.8% of the variance in turnover intention. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that to reduce turnover intention for men in nursing, it is necessary to increase job satisfaction, and organizational commitment.

PURPOSE The purpose of this research was to develop and test the validity and reliability of the Service Orientation Scale for Health Care Organization. METHODS The Service Orientation Scale for Health Care Organization, SERV*OR, was developed through forward-backward translation methods. Internal consistency and reliability, construct and criterion validity were calculated using SPSS Statistics WIN 17.0. Survey data were collected from 283 clinical nurses in a general hospital in J province. RESULTS The Service Orientation Scale for Health Care Organization showed reliable internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha's for the total scale ranging from .85~.91. Factor loading of the 30 items on four sub-scales ranged from .67~.83. The sub scales were named service leadership, service system, customer focus, and service control. Item convergent and discriminant validity were also established for the Service Orientation Scale for Health Care Organization. Criterion validity showed a significant correlation with customer orientation. CONCLUSION The findings of the study demonstrate that the Service Orientation Scale for Health Care Organization has satisfactory construct and criterion validity, and reliability and can be used to measure service orientation.
PURPOSE This study was designed to describe the burnout experiences of nurses counseling people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in hospital-based counseling services in Korea. METHODS A qualitative research technique with focus group interviews was used and the data were collected in 2012. Participants were 13 counseling nurses from 16 medical hospitals in South Korea who had worked full-time for more than six months as a counseling nurse for PLWHA. The 13 nurses made up 68.4% of all 19 official HIV counseling nurses in South Korea. Data were collected using focus group interviews and analyzed with the content analysis methodology of Downe-Wamboldt. RESULTS Burnout experience of counseling nurses for PLWHA was analyzed for two domains-causes of, and effects of burnout. Each domain was classified into three categories; personal, job-related, and relationships. Further 17 sub-categories and 47 concepts were discovered. CONCLUSION In this study various causes and effects of burnout experienced by nurses counseling PLWHA were identified. These findings can be used in developing effective strategies for nurses, administrators, and health policy makers to solve the burnout of counseling nurses. Further research is required to develop detailed and practical job description for nurses counseling PLWHA.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting burnout among clinical nurses according to Positive Psychological Capital. METHODS The study design was a descriptive survey and questionnaires were collected from 412 clinical nurses who worked in a general hospital in "J" city. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS In Model individual characteristics accounted for 27.8% of the influence on burnout. In model II with the addition of the 4 factors; Self-efficacy, Hope, Resilience, Optimism, individual characteristics accounted for 48.5% of the influence on burnout. Optimism and Resilience of the Positive Psychological Capital sub-variables were statistically useful as factors influencing burnout. CONCLUSION The results indicate that it is necessary to develop active human resource management and educational programs to decrease burnout and strengthen the Positive Psychological Capital of the nurses.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to develop an evaluation framework for QI activity in medical institutions and to analyze QI activity cases by applying the developed evaluation framework. METHOD A four-phase process was employed to develop the evaluation framework, and a descriptive survey was used for the QI case study. Data were collected in April, 2010 by examining 157 QI activity cases presented at conferences and published in Journal of Korean Society of Quality Assurance in Health Care over the past three years. Developed QI activity evaluation instruments were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 for Windows program. RESULT A QI Activity Evaluation Framework was developed. This framework consisted of 45 items. The department with the highest level of QI participation was the nursing department. The most frequent QI activity theme was patient safety. QI activity levels in Korean medical institutions are relatively equalized without significant differences according to institution characteristics. CONCLUSIONS From the quality aspect of QI activity, more systematic and scientific approaches are required to upgrade QI activity. This study could provide methodological guidelines for QI activity and be useful in setting goals and directions for QI activity in medical institutions in Korea.

PURPOSE This study was done to examine effects of task performance style, communication ability and their interaction on problem-solving ability and nursing competency of nursing students participating in a nursing management practicum. METHODS The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were 56 fourth year nursing students (25 in the cooperative task group and 31 in the individual task group) and data were collected from March to September 2010. Additionally, two groups were classified based on communication ability of students and four groups were classified by their task performance style and communication ability. Problem-solving ability and nursing competency were measured pre- and post-test and compared between groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 17.0 program. RESULTS Neither problem-solving ability and nursing competency were statistically significantly different according to task performance style. Nursing competency was statistically significantly higher in the high communication group compared to the low communication group. Problem-solving ability was significantly different among the four groups classified by task performance style and communication ability. CONCLUSION Nursing educators may need to improve students' communication ability to improve nursing competency and also assign different tasks based on communication ability of nursing students to improve problem-solving ability.
