Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of the organizational factors and nursing competency of novice and advanced beginner nurses on patient safety management activities, and to confirm the mediating effect of informal learning.
Methods Responses to questionnaires from 169 novice and advanced beginner nurses in South Korea were analyzed. For model fit and hypothesis, maximum likelihood method and covariance structure modeling were used, and bootstrapping was used for significance level. Organizational factors and nursing competencies were independent variables. Informal learning and patient safety management activities were mediator and dependent variables, respectively.
Results Informal learning exhibited a partial mediating effect on the relationship between nursing competency and patient safety management activities and completely mediated the relationship between organizational factors and patient safety management activities.
Conclusion In order to improve the patient safety management activities of novice and advanced nurses, there is a need for interventions that can improve organizational changes and individual nursing competency. Based on this, it will be possible to increase patient safety management activities by developing educational programs including informal learning and improving patient safety culture.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify trends of action learning based nursing education research from 2006 to 2016 and suggest directions for advancing action learning based nursing education. METHODS A review was made of 18 studies in nursing education reported in domestic journals. RISS 4U, KISS, DBpia, NDSL databases were searched using analysis criteria developed by the researchers. General and methodological characteristics and outcomes of action learning based nursing education were analyzed. RESULTS Of 18 papers, in 14 (77.8%) quantitative design was used, 16 (88.9%) were conducted in university settings, and virtual problem approach was used in 13 studies (72.2%). Writing task description was conducted in 8 studies (44.4%). Norminal group technique and logic tree were used in 6 studies (33.3%). The number of team members was 6–8 in 10 (55.6%) studies. Reflection journaling was used in 16 (88.9%) studies. Action learning was effective in improving core competency of nurses and nursing students such as problem solving ability and communication skill. CONCLUSION Findings indicate that action learning is a useful teaching method in nursing education even though action learning for nurses has not been actively applied. Therefore strategies to activate action learning for nurses are needed.

PURPOSE A descriptive survey was used in this study to identify the relationship between nurses' critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning readiness and professional nursing competency and to examine factors that influence professional nursing competency. METHODS The data were collected from 188 nurses and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 PC program. RESULTS Professional nursing competency was found to have significant pure correlations with critical thinking disposition (r=.59, p<.001), and self-directed learning readiness (r=.54, p<.001). The most influential factor influencing nurses' professional nursing competency was critical thinking disposition, followed by self-directed learning readiness (beta=.25, p=.003), work department (beta=.19, p=.001), total clinical career (beta=.19, p=.003), and position (beta=.12, p=.040), and these factors explained 43.8% of the variance in professional nursing competency. CONCLUSION The findings indicate the necessity of developing and applying strategies and educational programs to enhance individual nurse's critical thinking disposition and self-directed learning readiness. Furthermore, exploration is needed on ways to enhance professional nursing competency.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify factors in the clinical learning environment that affect clinical practice stress and anxiety in nursing students. METHODS Participants were 210 senior nursing students from two universities who had completed their clinical experience. Data were collected from self-report questionnaires and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 Program. RESULTS The mean scores for the clinical learning environment, the clinical practice stress, and anxiety were 3.16+/-0.68, 2.98+/-0.66, and 43.74+/-10.18 points, respectively. The regression analysis showed that the clinical learning environment contributed to 13% of the stress and 20% of the anxiety in the nursing students with the conditions controlled for general characteristics, department satisfaction and social support. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that the clinical learning environment should be carefully assessed to reduce nursing students' stress and anxiety from clinical practice. Therefore, collaboration between nursing universities and teaching hospitals is necessary to optimize clinical learning environment.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to identify the effects of an action learning based creative problem-solving (CPS) course on problem solving, creativity and team-member exchange in nursing students. METHODS A quasi-experimental study applying a non-equivalent control group pre-post design was employed. Sophomore nursing students (32 in the experimental group and 33 in the control group) were recruited from a university in G-city, Korea. Problem solving, creativity and team-member exchange were measured for the pretest and posttest using self-report questionnaires. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and ANCOVA with SPSS/Win 20.0 program were used to analyze the data. RESULTS The scores for problem solving, creativity and team-member exchange in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. CONCLUSION Results of this study indicate that an action learning based CPS course is an effective teaching method to improve nursing students' competencies. In the future longitudinal studies are needed to assess the long term effects of the course.

PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the effects of a blended learning program on ethical values in undergraduate nursing students. METHODS This study was a one group pretest-posttest design. Seventy-one undergraduate nursing students who were taking a nursing ethics course at K University in S city were conveniently selected. The blended learning program was undertaken for 120 minutes one day weekly for 15 weeks. It consisted of case-based learning through an online method combined with problem-based learning offline. Scores for ethical value were measured using the ethical values scale. RESULTS The ethical values score increased significantly in the students after the blended learning (p=.004). Of the subgroup of ethical values human-life, relationship with collaborator, and nursing job scores increased significantly in students after the blended learning, respectively (p=.034; p<.001; p<.001), the score for area as relationship with nursing clients decreased significantly in the students after the blended learning (p<.001). CONCLUSION The blended learning program was identified as an educational program which induces a positive effect on the development of ethical values in undergraduate nursing students, and in future it can be utilized in nursing ethics education.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to identify the effects of change commitment and learning orientation on the innovativeness of clinical nurse. METHODS The participants in this study were 268 nurses, working in hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces, and Daejeon City. Data were collected from June to August, 2012. A structured questionnaire was used for data collect and data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS The most significant predictors of innovativeness were education, normative commitment, continuance commitment and learning commitment. Continuance commitment negatively correlated with innovativeness. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that nurses' commitment to change and learning commitment were strongly linked to innovativeness. Management-level workers in these hospitals should have the skills and strategies to promote commitment to change include developing positive expectations about change positive outcomes.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify clusters of nursing competency, and investigate the influence of reflective thinking, team learning climate, and learning organization building according to nursing competency clusters. METHODS Participants were 244 clinical nurses who worked in 4 general hospitals in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires during June and July, 2011. Nursing competency, levels of reflection hierarchy, team learning climate, and learning organization building were measured. Data were analyzed using frequencies, means, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and K-means cluster analysis with SPSS/WIN 20.0 version. RESULTS Nursing competency correlated positively with intensive reflection, reflection, team learning climate, and learning organization building (p<.001). There were three clusters of nursing competency in a clinical ladder, which were derived from cluster analysis, grouped as high, middle, and low competency. Intensive reflection, reflection, team learning climate, and learning organization building showed significant differences according to grouping of nursing competency. CONCLUSION The results indicate that developing intensive reflection, reflection, team learning climate, and learning organization building would be useful strategies for enhancement of nursing competency.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify effects of action learning approaches on learning outcomes of students taking nursing management courses. METHODS The questionnaire surveys were completed between March 2011 and June 2012 by 109 undergraduate seniors in the nursing department of C University. Survey data were obtained 3 times: before, in and after the study of nursing management. The course consisted of lectures and clinical practices. Learning outcomes were measured through problem solving skills, team efficacy, and class satisfaction. Collected data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS 20.0 program. RESULTS Scores for problem solving skills (F=13.67, p<.001) and team efficacy (F=4.49, p=.012) showed statistically significant increases after the course. The scores also increased significantly after the lectures for 5 of 9 problem solving skill subscales: analysis skill, divergent thinking, decision making, assessment, feedback, and after the clinical practices for 2 subscales: divergent thinking, and execution and risk taking. Class satisfaction score also increased after both the lectures and the clinical practices. CONCLUSION The findings from this study suggest that an action learning approaches for nursing management courses would be a useful teaching and learning method to achieve learning outcomes.

PURPOSE This study was done to examine effects of task performance style, communication ability and their interaction on problem-solving ability and nursing competency of nursing students participating in a nursing management practicum. METHODS The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were 56 fourth year nursing students (25 in the cooperative task group and 31 in the individual task group) and data were collected from March to September 2010. Additionally, two groups were classified based on communication ability of students and four groups were classified by their task performance style and communication ability. Problem-solving ability and nursing competency were measured pre- and post-test and compared between groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 17.0 program. RESULTS Neither problem-solving ability and nursing competency were statistically significantly different according to task performance style. Nursing competency was statistically significantly higher in the high communication group compared to the low communication group. Problem-solving ability was significantly different among the four groups classified by task performance style and communication ability. CONCLUSION Nursing educators may need to improve students' communication ability to improve nursing competency and also assign different tasks based on communication ability of nursing students to improve problem-solving ability.

PURPOSE This study conducted to identify the effect of learning organization construction and learning orientation on organizational effectiveness among hospital nurses. Method: Data was collected from convenient sample of 296 nurses who worked for the major hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Gangwoen-do. The self-reported questionnaire was used to assess the general characteristics, the level of the learning organization construction, learning orientation and organizational effectiveness. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Result: The mean score of learning organization construction was 3.61(+/-.32), learning orientation got 3.26(+/-.39), and organizational effectiveness obtained 3.38(+/-.42). The learning organization construction affects of organizational effectiveness by 44.18% and learning orientation by 37.43%. CONCLUSION This finding indicates that learning organization construction and learning orientation affects the nurses' organizational effectiveness in hospital.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate factors which influence freshmen nursing students' problem solving abilities. METHOD The data were collected from 119 students by means of self-reported questionnaires measuring problem solving abilities, critical thinking disposition, and self-directed learning, on March 7th and 11th, 2010. RESULT For problem solving ability categories, the level of problem discovery was the highest followed by solution plan, problem definition, solution evaluation and solution implementation. The influencing factors on problem solving abilities of nursing students were critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning and gender. CONCLUSION Using the results of this study as a foundation, nursing education curriculum should be comprised of critical thinking skills and self-directed skills for the improvement of nursing students' problem solving abilities. It is also recommended that further studies be conducted in order to investigate comprehensive curriculum designs that allow for maximum accumulation of these proficiencies.
