Purpose This study aimed to identify the effects of the nursing practice environment and reciprocity among hospital nurses on their intent to leave, and to investigate the mediating effect of reciprocity in this process. Methods This study was conducted with 218 full-time nurses working for more than 6 months at four general hospitals located in two cities in South Korea. Data were collected using questionnaires from July 26 to August 12, 2022, and analyzed using IBM SPSS/WIN 23.0 and SPSS Process Macro. Results The nursing practice environment (r=-.38, p<.001) and reciprocity (r=-.33, p<.001) were negatively related to the intention to leave. The nursing practice environment and reciprocity affected intent to leave, reciprocity had a partial mediating effect between the nursing practice environment and intent to leave. Conclusion Nursing managers should strengthen the nursing work environment and reciprocity levels to reduce nurses’ intention to leave. Additionally, nursing managers need to effectively manage the organizational culture so that nursing services can be provided in a friendly medical culture that values fair and equal cooperation.
Purpose This study aimed to determine the mediating effect of leader-member exchange (LMX) on the relationship between nursing unit managers’ethical leadership and nurses’turnover intentions. Methods A cross-sectional nationwide survey was performed using structured questionnaires. A total of 225 clinical nurses working in general tertiary hospitals were recruited through proportional quota sampling; the quota used represented the location of working hospitals in South Korea. Data were collected through an online survey and snowball sampling from June to September 2022 and analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program. A mediation analysis was performed using a simple mediation model applying the PROCESS macro with 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. Results In bootstrapping, the indirect effect (X→M→Y) was statistically significant (B=-0.77, 95% CI:-1.02 to -0.50). LMX showed a mediating effect on the relationship between nursing unit managers’ethical leadership and clinical nurses’ turnover intention. In this model, the total effect was B=-0.93 (p<.001). Conclusion These findings suggest that LMX must be considered when making a strategy for nursing retention in the hospital setting. Nursing unit managers with ethical leadership could decrease nurses’ turnover intention by improving the LMX.
Purpose This study investigated the effects of job embeddedness and resilience on the relationship between job rotation stress and nursing work performance among clinical nurses. Methods: We conducted a nationwide online survey with 205 nurses employed at advanced general or general hospitals. Data were collected from August 17 to October 5, 2021. We analyzed the data using various descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffé test, Welch test, Games-Howell test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression, and the PROCESS macro with a 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. These analyses were conducted using SPSS Windows Software version 23.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro version 3.5.2. Results: Nurses' job embeddedness mediated the relationship between job rotation stress and nursing work performance (B=-0.02, p<.05). Furthermore, their resilience moderated this mediated relationship, also known as moderated mediation, with job embeddedness as the mediating factor (B=-0.02, p<.05). Conclusion: These findings imply that, when devising a strategy to improve the nursing work performance of nurses undergoing job rotation, their resilience levels should be considered. Reducing job rotation stress while concurrently enhancing job embeddedness is essential for enhancing the nursing work performance of nurses with high levels of resilience.
Purpose This study investigated the effects of nursing unit managers' authentic, transformational, and transactional leadership styles on positive psychological capital and turnover intention in advanced beginner-stage nurses (ABNs). Methods The study included 157 nurses with clinical experience ranging form more than one year to less than 3 years in three general hospitals. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS/WINdows software version 26.0. Results Authentic, transformational, and transactional leadership styles of nursing unit managers increased the positive psychological capital of ABNs, thereby lowering their turnover intention. Additionally, the turnover intention of ABNs was negatively correlated with the authentic, transformational, and transactional leadership styles of a nursing unit manager and positive psychological capital. Positive psychological capital showed a mediating effect in the relationship between authentic, transformational, and transactional leadership styles of nursing unit manager and turnover intention of ABNs. Conclusion To reduce ABNs turnover, medical institutions and nursing organizations should focus on enhancing nursing unit managers’ transformational and authentic leadership styles. Moreover, as transactional leadership has been found to decrease the turnover intention among ABNs, nursing unit managers should carefully consider their responsibilities and resources allocation to provide conditional compensation support to nurses.
Purpose The study aim was to examine Korean TV documentaries featuring nurses and to understand how the image of nurses has changed over time. Methods: Forty-one Korean documentaries featuring nurses were selected. The qualitative content analysis method of Elo and Kyngäs (2008) was used to identify the images of nurses. Results: Three themes emerged: “emphasis on the image of being a doctor’s assistant and caring person,” “image of kindness prevailing among the diverse roles of nurses,” and “reports on the poor labor conditions behind the positive images of nurses.” The image of nurses has gradually changed from performing a passive and auxiliary role to functioning as health care professionals. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, documentaries suggested that the poor labor conditions of nurses should be improved. Conclusion: Active publicity of nurses and nursing communities is needed using documentaries as a resource to inform the public of the various roles of nurses and promote the image of nurses as professionals.

Purpose This study aimed to examine the relationships between participative decision-making, psychological empowerment, and organizational citizenship behavior of nurses working in hospitals; moreover, we verified the moderated mediating effect of power distance orientation in these relationships. Methods A total of 201 nurses working at a university hospital in South Korea responded to the survey. Self-report surveys were used to gather data from July 15-August 15, 2021. SPSS 22.0, AMOS 22.0, and SPSS PROCESS macro were used for data analysis. Results Psychological empowerment significantly mediated the relationship between participative decision making and organizational citizenship behavior. Moreover, the moderating effect of power distance orientation on the relationship between participative decision making and psychological empowerment was also significant when the power distance orientation was at a low and average levels. However, the moderated mediating effect of power distance orientation on the relationship between participative decision making, psychological empowerment, and organizational citizenship behavior was insignificant. Conclusion Involving nurses with lower power distance orientation in decision making is crucial to elicit positive work performance and different strategies are necessary for those with higher power distance orientation. Finally, further studies are needed to understand the power distance orientation and positive work outcomes of nurses.

Purpose A descriptive survey-based study was undertaken to determine how emotional intelligence mediates the relationship between social support and resilience by clinical nurses, thereby providing primary data for improving resilience. Methods This study involved a descriptive survey of 202 nurses working in four general hospitals. Using SPSS/WIN 26.0, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results Social support had a statistically significant positive correlation with emotional intelligence (β=.49, p<.001) and resilience (β=.47, p<.001). Emotional intelligence showed a statistically significant positive correlation with resilience (β=.66, p<.001). Emotional intelligence was found to have a partial mediation effect on the relationship between social support and resilience (z=5.76, p<.001). Conclusion The study also discovered that social support and emotional intelligence are factors influencing clinical nurses' resilience. Furthermore, it evident that emotional intelligence has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between social support and resilience. Therefore, it is necessary to consider nurses’ emotional intelligence at the individual level to effectively improve resilience through social support.

Purpose This study aimed to identify the mediating effects of team trust on the relationship between the authentic leadership of the nursing unit manager as perceived by the nurses and the nurses’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB).
Methods: Data were collected from 276 nurses working over six months at a university hospital. The research model was designed based on the PROCESS Macro model 4 and analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program.
Results: The results show that authentic leadership and team trust had strong correlations with nurses’ organizational citizenship behavior. Nursing unit managers’ authentic leadership had a direct effect on team trust and organizational citizenship behavior. Team trust had a direct effect on organizational citizenship behavior. There was a mediation effect of team trust between authentic leadership and the organizational citizenship behavior of nurses.
Conclusion: To increase team trust in nursing units, the institution should provide systematic support such as education and training program to enhance the authentic leadership of nursing unit managers.

Purpose This study aims to determine nursing students’ orientation toward patient-centered care (PCC) and identify its influencing factors: their personality traits, empathy, and psychological capital (PsyCap). A mediating model was used to test the role of PsyCap in the association between empathy and PCC.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 300 nursing students from seven universities in South Korea. Their orientation toward PCC was measured using the Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS). Moreover, we analyzed the data using independent t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's r, and SPSS PROCESS macro.
Results: The overall mean score on the PPOS was 3.82±0.43, with the Caring and Sharing subscales accounting for 3.95±0.68 and 3.69±0.50, respectively. Nursing students’ satisfaction with their majors, practicums, and motivation for choosing this profession was significantly related to Caring-not Sharing. Nevertheless, PsyCap positively influenced both Caring (β=.24, p<.001) and Sharing (β=.18, p=.002). While empathy failed to significantly impact both Caring (β=.12, p=.087) and Sharing (β=.01, p=.931). PsyCap mediated the association of empathy with Caring (β=.20, p=.004); however, the same was not true for Sharing (β=.07, p=.366).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that the orientation of Korean nursing students toward PCC is not high. Therefore, to improve the PPOS Caring subscale, nurse educators should formulate better strategies to enhance nursing students’ satisfaction with their major and practicums, empathy, and PsyCap. The importance of sharing health-related information with patients and family caregivers should be emphasized in the nursing curriculum.

Purpose This study was done to analyze effects of leader-member exchange as perceived by nurses who returned to work after parental leave: conflict between work and family via job stress. Methods A cross-sectional study design was adopted and data were collected from 140 nurses. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program (descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis). Results Mean scores were 3.44±0.64 out of 5 for leader-member exchange, 3.45±0.59 out of 5 for job stress, and 2.82±0.80 out of 5 for conflict between work and family. The leader-member exchange had negative correlations with job stress (r=-.31, p=.003) and conflict between work and family (r=-.36, p<.001). The leader-member exchange had direct impacts on conflict between work and family (β=-.26, p=.002) and indirect via job stress (β=.35, p<.001). Job stress had partial mediating effects on relations between leader-member exchange and conflict between work and family (Z=-3.00, p<.001). The leader-member exchange and job stress explained 41% of the conflict between work and family. Conclusion The findings from this study indicate that active human resource management policies should be established in order to increase the leader-member exchange.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify how political interest, efficacy and media usage influence political participation in hospital nurses. METHODS Participants were 286 nurses, who were informed of the study purpose and agreed to participate. Data were collected during November and December, 2012 using a questionnaire on political interest, political efficacy, media usage and political participation. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients, and Multiple Stepwise Regression. RESULTS Scores for political participation and political interest was average. The score for political efficacy was higher than average. Political participation was significantly different by education level, job career, position, and intention to vote in the election for the 18th President. Political participation had a moderate positive correlation with political interest (r=.50, p<.001), political efficacy (r=.32, p<.001) and media usage (r=.14, p=.022). Political interest (beta=.43) was the factor most influential on political participation, explaining 25% of the variance. A total of 32% of political participation was explained by political interest, political efficacy, and TV news or SNS for media use. CONCLUSION The results suggest that it is necessary to develop strategies to promote political interest and political efficacy for hospital nurses to improve political participation.

PURPOSE This study was done to examine the effects of information searches from media as communication cues for health behavior, specifically smoking, drinking liquor, cancer examinations, and regular exercise. METHODS Data were collected through a web survey with a sample size of 600 and analyzed using SPSS 18.0. RESULTS The results show that the newspaper as a communication cue has an effect on health behavior such as regular exercise and smoking, whereas television only affects regular exercise. CONCLUSION The results indicate that there are differences between media as communication cues to improve health behavior and that messages related to health information should be exposed with cautious consideration to media choice so as to increase the effects of message. Managerial implications of the study results are suggested.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare the cost using different methods of costing nursing activities for patients with chronic otitis media having surgery. METHOD Data were collected from 30 patients who had mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty. To compare the cost, the researchers used three different costing methods; consumed time, resource based relative value scale (RBRVS), and critical pathway (CP). RESULTS Twenty-six nursing activities for surgical patients with chronic otitis media were found. Total cost was 83,843.7 won using RBRVS. The costliest activity was recording at 9,734.4 won, followed by confirmation of doctors' orders at 9,302.4 won, and injection with infusion pump at 9,072.0 won. There was a difference in nursing activities performed according to the length of hospital stay, and the cost was highest on the surgery day at 13,417.8 won. Comparatively, the total cost was 72,014.4 won using CP. CONCLUSIONS Nursing activities are performed in various forms according to the disease and patient's condition, and different nursing activities are executed according to the length of hospital stay. In order to measure the load of nursing activities and distribute it appropriately, it is necessary to analyze the cost of nursing activities by the process of nursing services performed.
