Effects of Workplace Bullying, Job Stress, Self-esteem, and Burnout on the Intention of University Hospital Nurses to Keep Nursing Job

PURPOSE
Medical institutions and their patients benefit from continued employment of nurses. In this study an assessment was done of important factors that influence nurses' intention to leaving their jobs.
METHODS
The sample consisted of 229 university hospital nurses. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, Pearson's Correlation Analysis, and Hierarchical Multiple Regression.
RESULTS
The control variables, including age, current position, and health status explained 18% (F=16.37, p<.001) of variance in retention intention. The control variables, bullying, job stress, self-esteem, and burnout collectively explained 27% of variance in retention intention.
CONCLUSION
The findings indicate that the factors influencing retention intention are age, current position, and health status, while self-esteem and burnout in work places are new and more recent factors that impact retention intention. These findings can be utilized to develop strategies to increase self-esteem and retention intention.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify relationships among self-esteem, social support, nursing organizational culture, experience of workplace bullying, and the consequences of workplace bullying in hospital nurses, and then to provide basic information for developing workplace bullying prevention programs.
METHODS
Participants were 122 hospital nurses from three general hospitals. Data collection was done during April and May 2015. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires which were used to identify participants' characteristics, self-esteem, social support, nursing organizational culture, and workplace bullying.
RESULTS
Approximately one quarter of the nurses had experienced workplace bullying in the past six months. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that experience of workplace bullying (β=.45) and self-esteem (β=-.31) explained 53.3% of the variance in consequences of workplace bullying.
CONCLUSION
Based on the findings that experiencing workplace bullying and having a low self-esteem were likely to increase workplace bullying in hospital nurses, there is a need to develop prevention and intervention programs on avoiding or dealing with workplace bullying.

The Effects of Hospital Nurses' Self-Esteem and Communication Skill on Self-Leadership and the Quality of Nursing Service

PURPOSE
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of hospital nurses' self-leadership, communication skill, and self-esteem on the quality of nursing service.
METHODS
The participants, 230 nurses working at a general hospital in Seoul, completed a cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire survey between January 17 and 28, 2014. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 19.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, one way & two way ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
RESULTS
Nurses' self-esteem and communication skill had significant main effects on self-leadership and the quality of nursing service, but the interaction effect of the two independent variables was not significant. Variables that significantly influenced the quality of nursing service were self-leadership, communication skill, self-esteem, and career longevity. The explanatory power of these variables for the quality of nursing service was 54.4%.
CONCLUSION
Findings indicate a need for education programs for nurses which are designed to promote communication skill and enhance self-esteem and self-leadership skills which will in turn enhance the quality of nursing service.

The Impact of Social Support and Self-esteem on Nurses' Empowerment

PURPOSE
This study was done to measure the level of social support, self-esteem, and empowerment and to identify any effect of social support and self-esteem on the empowerment of nurses.
METHODS
The study design was a descriptive survey using questionnaires which were given to 381 nurses in C province. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regressions.
RESULTS
The mean score for nurses' empowerment was 2.83+/-0.66. Seven individual characteristics, social support(family, meaningful persons, supervisors, and co-workers) and self-esteem accounted for 23.3% of the variance in nurses' empowerment. Prediction elements influencing empowerment of nurses were salary per month, self-esteem, and social support(supervisors).
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that it is necessary to increase nurses' empowerment. Social support by supervisors and self-esteem were confirmed as important factors to increase nurses' empowerment. In addition, raising the monthly average income would increase empowerment of nurses.

Role Transition of Senior Year Nursing Students: Analysis of Predictors for Role Transition

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of role transition from a student nurse to a registered nurse among senior year nursing students and to examine factors affecting their role transition.
METHODS
A descriptive survey with convenience sampling was conducted in four nursing colleges in Seoul, South Korea. Data were collected using a self-administrated questionnaire. Four instruments including role transition, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and anxiety during clinical practicum were used and the students'demographics were also collected. A multiple logistic regression was used to identify predictors for the role transition.
RESULTS
A total of 233 nursing students were surveyed and final analysis was conducted utilizing 226 participants. Mean point of perceived role transition (5 point scale) was 3.34+/-0.44. In a multiple regression model, high self-esteem, good interpersonal relationships, low anxiety during clinical practicum, and high satisfaction in college life were significant predictors of a smooth transition (Adj. R2=.32, F=22.28, p<.001).
CONCLUSION
The findings suggest that role transition from a student nurse to a registered nurse is facilitated through the establishment of programs to improve self-esteem and interpersonal relationships and to reduce anxiety during clinical practicum.

Perceived Hurts and Forgiveness in Clinical Nurses: The Status and Influencing Variables

PURPOSE
The purposes of this study were to describe events resulting in perceived hurts in nursing, and to identify factors influencing forgiveness in clinical nurses.
METHODS
The study was a descriptive correlation design. From May to July, 2009, the researcher used interviews to collect data from 148 clinical nurses from five hospitals in D city.
RESULTS
Clinical nurses received perceived hurt from peer-nurses, care-givers, and doctors, and the reasons for the perceived hurts were blame, neglect, and valuation. Levels of forgiveness in clinical nurses were different according to who caused the perceived hurt, the degree of the perceived hurt, and endeavors to resolve the perceived hurts. Levels of forgiveness in clinical nurses were negatively correlated with age, degree of perceived hurt, and degree of anger expression, and positively correlated with degree of self-esteem. The strongest predictors of forgiveness in clinical nurses were degree of anger expression, age, and degree of hurt.
CONCLUSION
The findings of the study suggest that nursing staff should be able to identify reasons for perceived hurt in clinical nurses and provide a forgiveness program for each nursing situation.

A Study on Nurses' Self-Leadership, Self-Esteem, and Organizational Effectiveness

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to define nurses' level of self-leadership, self-esteem, and organizational effectiveness, and to examine relationships among above variables.
METHODS
The subjects of this study were 313 nurses from two general hospitals located in Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The data was collected by self-reported instruments: Self-leadership scale, Self-esteem scale, Job satisfaction scale, Organizational commitment scale, and Turnover intention scale. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regres don u dng SPSS-PC program.
RESULTS
The average scores of variables were; self-leadership, 3.72/5.00 self-esteem, 3.76/5.00 Job satisfaction, 3.36/5.00 organizational commitment, 3.29/5.00 and turnover intentioncri 2.94/5.00. Self-leadership was dgnificantly correlated to self-esteem, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. Self-leadership, job satisfaction, and turnover intention explained 52.3% of organizational commitment. Self-leadership and organizational commitment explained 43% of turnover intention.
CONCLUSIONS
It is recommended to develop standardized self-leadership curriculum in the nursing school to build a foundation of self-leadership from undergraduate nursing students. Educational programs are needed that promote nurses' self-leadership as regular continuing education. Organizational effectiveness would be improved by providing programs to enhance nurses' self-esteem, educational motivation, and organizational commitment, which boost self-leadership.
