PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify NANDA, NIC, and NOC frequently used and their linkages in major nursing departments for development of the nursing process and nursing management system.
METHODS
This study was a descriptive study. Data were collected from 123 nurses who worked in medical, surgical, pediatric, gynecologic, and psychiatric department. The questionnaire was based on the NANDA, NOC, NIC, and NANDA-NOC-NIC linkage system. This research was analyzed by an EXCEL program and SPSS Pc+15.0.
RESULTS
Nursing diagnoses frequently used were 'anxiety', 'disturbed sleep pattern', 'activity intolerance', 'social isolation', 'nausea', 'ineffective airway clearance', 'chronic pain', nursing outcomes frequently used were 'thermoregulation', 'bowel elimination', 'pain control', 'vital sign status', 'pain level', and nursing interventions frequently used were 'nausea management', 'airway suctioning', 'bowel elimination management', 'diarrhea management', 'medication management'. NANDA-NOC-NIC linkages in major nursing departments were recognized, and these results were similar to the results of other researches.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study will be provided as a guideline to apply to the nursing process and development of the nursing process system with the NANDA-NOC-NIC linkage in major nursing department.

A Study on Nurses' Self-Leadership, Self-Esteem, and Organizational Effectiveness

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to define nurses' level of self-leadership, self-esteem, and organizational effectiveness, and to examine relationships among above variables.
METHODS
The subjects of this study were 313 nurses from two general hospitals located in Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The data was collected by self-reported instruments: Self-leadership scale, Self-esteem scale, Job satisfaction scale, Organizational commitment scale, and Turnover intention scale. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regres don u dng SPSS-PC program.
RESULTS
The average scores of variables were; self-leadership, 3.72/5.00 self-esteem, 3.76/5.00 Job satisfaction, 3.36/5.00 organizational commitment, 3.29/5.00 and turnover intentioncri 2.94/5.00. Self-leadership was dgnificantly correlated to self-esteem, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. Self-leadership, job satisfaction, and turnover intention explained 52.3% of organizational commitment. Self-leadership and organizational commitment explained 43% of turnover intention.
CONCLUSIONS
It is recommended to develop standardized self-leadership curriculum in the nursing school to build a foundation of self-leadership from undergraduate nursing students. Educational programs are needed that promote nurses' self-leadership as regular continuing education. Organizational effectiveness would be improved by providing programs to enhance nurses' self-esteem, educational motivation, and organizational commitment, which boost self-leadership.

Development and Evaluation of a Patient Safety-focused Inservice Education Program for Surgical Nurse

PURPOSE
The aim of this project was to develop a patient safety-focused inservice education program for surgical nurse and to test the effects of this program.
METHODS
Methodological designs for instruments development, a pretest-posttest and a posttest design were employed. After the education, nurses' satisfaction, confidence, usefulness and application of 137 nurses were evaluated at 15 surgical units of a tertiary teaching hospital in Seoul, Korea. The education contents are 6 skill areas (infusion pump use, suction, chest tube drainage, oxygen administration, nebulizer use, insulin administration) and medication knowledge. Teaching methods were lecture, instructor demonstration, and 1:1 skill test. Descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon test, Spearman's correlation and Stepwise regression were used.
RESULTS
Satisfaction scores for skills and medication education were 4.00-4.21 (out of 5). The more performance frequency in 6 skills, the higher score in confidence as well as in usefulness and application, and the higher satisfaction with the program, the higher score in usefulness, application, confidence, and medication knowledge. Medication knowledge improved after the education (Z=-7.757, p<.001). Significant predictors of skill confidence were application of skills in job performance, medication confidence, and career in present unit.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study suggest that systematic and continuous inservice education will improve patient safety by promoting nursing quality.

Structural Factors Influencing the Quality Management Activities in Nursing Homes

PURPOSE
Nursing home quality indicators have been focused widely on result outcomes, not for the environment in that quality of service are delivered. This study aimed to examine structural factors influencing quality management activities in nursing homes.
METHOD
Sample was 170 nursing homes responded to the survey questionnaire which was distributed to the 543 nursing homes nation-wide. Data were collected on structural characteristics, types of services, and quality management activities. Data were analyzed with the descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression.
RESULT
Most of the nursing homes were operated as free of charge by the social welfare ownership. Average number of residents was 52.1 with severe and mild dementia and bedridden status. In terms of quality management activities, 34% of the sample had CQI committee that focused their activities on services delivery process, performance appraisal, record keeping regularly. 30.6% of quality management activities were accounted for by the number of residents with dementia, the ratio of RN to residents, rehabilitation services, and social wefare services in nursing homes.
CONCLUSION
We recommend that more comprehensive quality management activities should be developed as process quality indicators in conjunction with the outcome indicators.

Canonical Correlation between Organizational Culture and Informatics Competency

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine the canonical correlation between organizational culture and nurses' informatics competency.
METHOD
Participants in this study were 354 nurses from three hospitals and one university. The scales of organizational culture, informatics competency for nurses were used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation were used for data analysis.
RESULTS
The dominant organizational culture was hierarch-oriented culture. Nursing informatics competency of the participants was relatively low with a mean score 3.04. Organizational culture was related to informatics competency with 2 significant canonical variables. The first variate showed the higher four subcategories of organizational culture showed the better nursing informatics. The second variate indicated that nurses felt higher innovation-related and lower hierarch-related culture showed higher medical informatics-related software usage and computer related information management, lower perception of informatics and information search using internet.
CONCLUSION
Organization culture has a major of impact on the success of information system use. Therefore, the continuous strategy for higher innovation-related organizational culture such as management support should be needed.

PURPOSE
This study was designed to construct a model which explains the career management, career plateau and career satisfaction of the factors influencing the career commitment of nurses.
METHOD
The data collection was conducted from Aug. 24, 2009 to Sep. 22, 2009 through self-reported questionaries. Participants were 441 nurses who had worked in 2 national university hospitals, 1 university hospitals, and 1 hospitals founded by business enterprises. The data was analyzed by SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 15.0 for structural model.
RESULTS
Career commitment was directly impacted by career management, career plateau, career satisfaction. The predictable variables of the hypothetical model explained 28.4% of career commitment. Career commitment was significantly influenced by career management, career plateau, career satisfaction.
CONCLUSION
The results of study suggest that some strategies are needed which focus on career management, career plateau and career satisfaction in order to promote the nurse's career commitment.

Factors Influencing Problem Solving Abilities of Freshmen Nursing Students

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors which influence freshmen nursing students' problem solving abilities.
METHOD
The data were collected from 119 students by means of self-reported questionnaires measuring problem solving abilities, critical thinking disposition, and self-directed learning, on March 7th and 11th, 2010.
RESULT
For problem solving ability categories, the level of problem discovery was the highest followed by solution plan, problem definition, solution evaluation and solution implementation. The influencing factors on problem solving abilities of nursing students were critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning and gender.
CONCLUSION
Using the results of this study as a foundation, nursing education curriculum should be comprised of critical thinking skills and self-directed skills for the improvement of nursing students' problem solving abilities. It is also recommended that further studies be conducted in order to investigate comprehensive curriculum designs that allow for maximum accumulation of these proficiencies.
