Purpose This study investigated the effects of newly graduated nurses’ perceived readiness for nursing practice, resilience, and preceptors’ teaching behaviors on turnover intention.
Methods A survey was conducted among 168 newly graduated nurses between August 7 and 31, 2023. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis.
Results The factors that significantly affected turnover intention included preceptors' teaching behavior (β=-.29, p=.001) and resilience (β=-.21, p=.026). This model explained 32.0% of the variance.
Conclusion Newly graduated nurses’ resilience and their initial training environment are key factors influencing turnover intention. Therefore, nursing managers should develop strategies to enhance the resilience of newly graduated nurses and improve training systems. Additionally, efforts should be made to promote positive teaching behaviors among the educators responsible for training newly graduated nurses.

Purpose This study aimed to confirm the mediating effects of transition shock on the relationships among grit, social support, and retention intention of new graduate nurses. Methods A total of 174 new graduate nurses were recruited from a university hospital and a general hospital. The data were collected between November and December 2022 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffé test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Baron and Kenny’s three-step regression analysis, and the PROCESS Macro Model 4. Results Nurses’ retention intention was positively correlated with grit (r=.56, p<.001) and social support (r=.48, p<.001) and negatively correlated with transition shock (r=-.56, p<.001). The mediating analysis revealed that transition shock mediated the relationship between grit and retention intention as well as between social support and retention intention. Conclusion Based on the findings, an intervention program should be developed to reduce transition shock in new graduate nurses to increase their intention of retention.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to describe differences in turnover intention according to work period for new nurses and to explore factors influencing differences in turnover intention. METHODS A longitudinal survey design was used. A structured questionnaire regarding CC (Clinical competence), MNC (Missed Nursing Care), WE (Work Engagement) and turnover intention was administered twice(at 2 months and 5 months of employment) to 98 new nurses working at a tertiary hospital. RESULTS The regression model with each of the differences for MNC, WE, and subjective satisfaction with department against differences of turnover intention was statistically significant (F=11.98, p < .001). This model explained 26% of differences in turnover intention (Adj. R²=.26). Especially, differences in WE (β=-.43, p < .001), and differences in MNC (β=.18 p=.044) were identified as factors influencing differences in turnover intention. CONCLUSION The turnover intention of new nurses decreased between the first 2 months and 5 months and this difference was influenced by WE and MNC. Therefore, it is necessary to provide social and institutional supports such as effective adaptation programs with sufficient periods of time for newly graduated nurses.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance on the experience of new graduate nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants in this study were 149 nurses who had less than 12 months of nursing experience and were working at one of 4 general hospitals. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire from Nov. 2012 to Oct. 2014. RESULTS The total mean score for Psychosocial health was 3.07+/-0.60, Self-nurturance, 3.38+/-0.44, and graduate nurse experience, 2.59+/-0.27. The effect of Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance predicted 23% of variance in graduate nurse experience. CONCLUSION These results indicate that Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance have a positive relationship to graduate nurse experience. Therefore, further studies including approaches that support Psychosocial health and Self-nurturance are recommended to help in the adaptation of newly graduated nurses to clinical settings.

PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the effects of a blended learning program on ethical values in undergraduate nursing students. METHODS This study was a one group pretest-posttest design. Seventy-one undergraduate nursing students who were taking a nursing ethics course at K University in S city were conveniently selected. The blended learning program was undertaken for 120 minutes one day weekly for 15 weeks. It consisted of case-based learning through an online method combined with problem-based learning offline. Scores for ethical value were measured using the ethical values scale. RESULTS The ethical values score increased significantly in the students after the blended learning (p=.004). Of the subgroup of ethical values human-life, relationship with collaborator, and nursing job scores increased significantly in students after the blended learning, respectively (p=.034; p<.001; p<.001), the score for area as relationship with nursing clients decreased significantly in the students after the blended learning (p<.001). CONCLUSION The blended learning program was identified as an educational program which induces a positive effect on the development of ethical values in undergraduate nursing students, and in future it can be utilized in nursing ethics education.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect reality shock in new nurses. METHODS Participants were 216 newly graduated nurses with less than 1 year experience in 5 university and 10 general hospitals in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam, A self-report questionnaire was completed by the nurses between November 18 and December 25, 2013. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and hierarchial multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 Program. RESULTS Average scores for work environment and environmental reality shock were 2.63+/-0.33 and 2.66+/-0.43 points respectively. Regression analysis showed that with the nurses' demographic and work characteristics controlled, work environment explained 4.2% of the reality shock. Factors significantly affecting reality shock included nurses' changing residence because of job (beta=.21, p=.001), whether they were able to work on the unit of their choice (beta=-.13, p=.031) and whether they had a choice in days off (beta=-.14, p=.038). CONCLUSION When these factors are considered, reduction in nurses' reality shock requires improvement in work environment, placing new nurses in a department of their choice and allowing them a choice in off-duty days. These measures would also help achieve organizational goals and develop the new nurses as professional nurses.

PURPOSE This practice study was done to describe the process and outcomes of application of Evidence Based Nursing (EBN) Education to nursing management clinical practicum and suggest strategies to diffuse EBN into nursing management education. METHODS Education on the evidence based nursing management process was provided to 65 senior nursing students from a university. Nursing management clinical practicum integrated with EBN. The setting was a five full day-clinical practicum. Group and individual training on EBN process with lectures, small group discussions, conferences, and educational prescription were provided. Outcomes were analyzed using paired t test for 65 participants. RESULTS Evidence based nursing competency increased significantly showing improvement in understanding EBN, formulating clinical question, searching & classifying the evidence, recognizing level of evidence, considering patient preference, and evaluating outcomes. Nursing students' access and use of evidence based information resource also improved. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that the application of EBN to nursing management clinical practicum is effective to improve EBN competency in undergraduate students and should be further applied in nursing education using the systematic strategies.

PURPOSE This study was done to provide information on issues of nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing, from the perspective of nursing managers, and to make suggestion for improving nursing education programs. METHODS Ten nursing managers participated in this study. They were in charge of clinical nursing education in the fields of nursing practice. Data were collected using focus group interviews and analyzed with the content analysis methodology of Downe - Wamboldt's. RESULTS Six types of nursing core competency - therapeutic nursing competency, professional nursing competency, administrative nursing competency, humanistic nursing competency, relational nursing competency, and personal nursing competency - were identified as nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing. CONCLUSION Results of the study show important evidence for decision-making about nursing curriculum revision based on nursing core competency, both in the classroom and in nursing practice areas. These results should contribute to the development of evaluation indicators for nursing students or new nurses. Further research is required to measure degree of nursing core competency in graduates of nursing and to identify the effect of competency-based education for improving nursing core competency.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the perception about the elderly among undergraduate students interested in the elderly care business. METHOD In this descriptive research, a total of 183 undergraduate students were participated. The instrument was consisted of a 18-item semantic differential scale developed by Sanders et al (1984). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients by SPSS 18.0. RESULT Undergraduate students' perception about the elderly was slightly positive(2.98+/-1.51). The significant factors associated with the perception about the elderly were gender, age, present residing state with the elderly, experience of residing with the elderly at the past. Male students' perception about the elderly was more positive than female. Among 18 items, 'wise' and 'knowledgeable' was highly related to the perception about the elderly(r=.671, p=.001). CONCLUSION These findings indicate that the items of optimistic, attractive, flexible and good were the impressive perceptions about the elderly for the undergraduate students. The result of this study can be utilized to promote perception about the elderly among undergraduate students.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify key abilities needed to develop for student nurses. METHODS A methodological research design was used in this study. The abilities for student nurses were developed through literature review and educational objectives analysis of 60 nursing colleges in Korea. RESULTS Finally, the abilities required to develop for student nurses in higher education were 8 cluster of abilities and 19 abilities such as problem solving ability, relationship ability, professional ability, ability in information processing, globalization, voluntary service. CONCLUSION To perceive and achieve abilities for student nurses in higher education has to be needed a systematic approach in setting objectives, to improve curriculum and to develop program and educational methods.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of clinical competence in new graduate nurses. METHODS The subjects of this study were 238 nurses at 13 general hospitals who have had less than 12 months of nursing experience. The data were collected by structured questionnaire from August 5 to August 31 of 2009 and analyzed by the SPSS Win 12.0 program. RESULTS The total mean score for clinical competence was 181.05+/-15.17, critical thinking disposition was 94.65+/-8.12, and practice environment was 41.00+/-5.55. There were significant differences of clinical competence according to the GPA (t=-3.58, p<.001), the number of beds in the hospital (t=-3.22, p=.001), instruction by preceptor (t=-2.32, p=.021), and previous experience of clinical practice in the hospital (t=-2.21, p=.028). Additionally, critical thinking disposition and practice environment were positively correlated to clinical competence (r=.50, p<.001; r=.20, p=.002). In multivariate approach, predictors included in this study explained 43% of variance in clinical competence. Significant predictors of clinical competence were critical thinking disposition (beta=.50, p<.001), practice environment (beta=.14, p=.012), and working duration (beta=.13, p=.018). CONCLUSIONS Based on these findings, it is needed that providing supportive practice environment and developing curriculum for enhancing the critical thinking disposition to improve the clinical competence in new graduate nurses.
