Effects of Resilience, Nursing Managers’ Empowering Leadership on Turnover Intention among New Nurses: Mediating role of Transition Shock

Purpose
This study aimed to identify the effects of resilience and nursing managers’ empowering leadership on turnover intention among new nurses, as well as the mediating role of transition shock.
Methods
This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 167 new nurses working in tertiary hospitals in Korea between July 1st and July 13, 2022. The relationships among the variables were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and the factors affecting turnover intention were identified using PROCESS macro analysis.
Results
Resilience (direct effect=-0.02, p=.781) and nursing managers’ empowering leadership (direct effect=-0.00, p=.992) did not directly affect new nurses’ turnover intention. Transition shock had mediating role in the relationship between resilience and turnover intention (indirect effect=-0.12, 95% Boot confidence interval=-0.23~-0.04) and between nursing managers’ empowering leadership and turnover intention (indirect effect=-0.14, 95% Boot confidence interval=-0.23~-0.06).
Conclusion
Resilience and nursing managers’ empowering leadership indirectly influence turnover intention through transition shock among new nurses. To reduce turnover intention among new nurses, programs for preventing or mitigating their transition shock should be provided. In addition, improving the resilience of new nurses and nursing managers’ empowering leadership may contribute to reducing turnover intention among new nurses by mitigating their transition shock.

The relationship between Participative Decision Making and Organizational Citizenship Behavior of nurses: Mediation Effect of Psychological Empowerment and Moderated Mediation Effect of Power Distance Orientation

Purpose
This study aimed to examine the relationships between participative decision-making, psychological empowerment, and organizational citizenship behavior of nurses working in hospitals; moreover, we verified the moderated mediating effect of power distance orientation in these relationships.
Methods
A total of 201 nurses working at a university hospital in South Korea responded to the survey. Self-report surveys were used to gather data from July 15-August 15, 2021. SPSS 22.0, AMOS 22.0, and SPSS PROCESS macro were used for data analysis.
Results
Psychological empowerment significantly mediated the relationship between participative decision making and organizational citizenship behavior. Moreover, the moderating effect of power distance orientation on the relationship between participative decision making and psychological empowerment was also significant when the power distance orientation was at a low and average levels. However, the moderated mediating effect of power distance orientation on the relationship between participative decision making, psychological empowerment, and organizational citizenship behavior was insignificant.
Conclusion
Involving nurses with lower power distance orientation in decision making is crucial to elicit positive work performance and different strategies are necessary for those with higher power distance orientation. Finally, further studies are needed to understand the power distance orientation and positive work outcomes of nurses.

Purpose
This study aimed to identify the effects of empowering leadership and job crafting on work engagement among nurses. Methods: Data were collected from 161 hospital nurses. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and Hayes's PROCESS macro method for the mediation effect. Results: Empowering leadership and job crafting showed a significantly positive correlation with work engagement. Furthermore, job crafting had a mediating effect on the relationship between empowering leadership and work engagement. Conclusion: A strategy that enhances task job crafting and cognitive job crafting of members by strengthening manager's empowering leadership can lead to work engagement and have a positive effect on organizational performance.

Structural Equation Modeling of Nurses’ Experience of Workplace Incivility

Purpose
This study was designed to construct and test a structural equation model of nurses’ experience of workplace incivility based on the model of the Affective Events Theory. Methods: A total of 299 nurses from five general hospitals responded to structured questionnaires measuring personality traits (emotionality and agreeableness), structural empowerment, workplace incivility experience, emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. Results: The hypothetical model showed a good fit with the data: χ2 /df=1.88, GFI=.93, CFI=.95, NFI=.91, TLI=.94, SRMR=.03, RMSEA=.05. Structural empowerment had an effect on the experience of workplace incivility among nurses, but the influence of personality was not significant. Workplace incivility had significant direct effects on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. The experience of workplace incivility mediates the impact of structural empowerment on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. Conclusion: Structural empowerment in nursing unit can reduce nurses’ experience of workplace incivility and emotional exhaustion and increase their job satisfaction. At the same time, nurses’ experience of workplace incivility can increase their emotional exhaustion and decrease job satisfaction. This suggests that nurse managers should consider enhancing structural empowerment and develop programs or activities to improve it and manage workplace inciviltiy.

Effects of Workplace Bullying and Empowerment on Nurses’ Turnover Intention

Purpose
This study was done using quantile regression to identify the factors affecting nurses’ turnover intention. Methods: A sample of 163 nurses, who had worked in hospitals for more than 6 months, was recruited from two online nursing communities. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, which included turnover intention, workplace bullying, empowerment, and sociodemographic and job characteristics. Collected data were analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman correlation coefficients, and quantile regression. Results: The factors affecting turnover intentions by quantile were partially different, but the predicting factors over 50% quantile were workplace bullying (Q50, b=0.15, p=.002; Q75, b=0.10, p=.025; Q90, b=0.12, p=.012), structural empowerment (Q50, b=-0.64, p<.001; Q75, b=-0.55, p=.005) and experience in current unit (Q75, b=-0.04, p=.013; Q90: b=-0.05, p=.002). Conclusion: Different factors have an influence on nurses’ turnover intention level. Nursing organizations need to develop customized management strategies to address nurses' turnover intention levels based on policies that reduce workplace bullying and strengthen structural empowerment.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among intention of retention, nursing organizational culture, empowering leadership and organizational socialization of new graduate nurses, and identify factors affecting intent to stay.
METHODS
Data were collected from 184 new nurses who were graduated in 2017 and are now working in three tertiary hospitals. The relationship among the variables was analyzed with Pearson coefficient correlations and factors affecting intention of retention were identified by using multiple linear regression analysis.
RESULTS
The mean score for intention of retention was 5.23±1.25 (out of 8). Intent to stay had positive relationships with innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture, task-oriented culture, empowerment leadership, organizational socialization. Factors influencing intent to stay were ‘motivation for selection of nursing (β=.19, p<.001)’, ‘organizational commitment (β=.45, p<.001)’, ‘job identity (β=.18, p=.005)’, and ‘interpersonal relationship of personal characteristics (β=.16, p=.005)’ in organizational socialization, and ‘coaching (β=.29, p=.001)’, and ‘showing concerning (β=−.19, p=.036)’ by empowering leadership. These factors explained 53.0% of the variance in intention of retention (F=35.96, p<.001).
CONCLUSION
Focusing on the factors of influence derived from this study, relevant institutions and nursing organizations require the creation of a work environment and leadership to increase the retention of new graduate nurses.

PURPOSE
The objective of this study was to verify a mediating effect of followership in the relationship of organizational citizenship behavior and nurse managers' empowering leadership as perceived by nurses.
METHODS
The study was a descriptive research involving 222 nurses working on nursing units in a university hospital. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and simple and multiple regression techniques with the SPSS 23.0 program. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test.
RESULTS
Nurse managers' empowering leadership and followership showed a positive correlation (r=.22, p=.001), and a significantly positive correlation with organizational citizenship behavior (r=.32, p<.001). Also, followership and organizational citizenship behavior showed a positive correlation (r=.52, p<.001). The results of the study verified that nurses' followership had a mediating effect on organizational citizenship behavior in nurse unit managers' empowering leadership, a positive effect on organizational citizenship behavior and ultimately an increase in organizational achievement.
CONCLUSION
Nurse managers need to be aware of the importance of empowering leadership, and endeavor to enhance it further. As for the organizational level, support to strengthen empowering leadership is required.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of head nurses' authentic leadership and empowerment on job satisfaction, and nursing performance of nurses and to identify the mediating effect of empowerment in the relationships of head nurses' authentic leadership, with nurses' job satisfaction, and nursing performance.
METHODS
The sample for this study was 149 nurses from 2 general hospitals located in Busan. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program was used for analysis. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test.
RESULTS
Head nurses' authentic leadership showed positive correlations with empowerment, job satisfaction, and nursing performance. Empowerment showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between head nurses' authentic leadership and nurses job satisfaction, and a perfect mediating effect in the relationship between head nurses' authentic leadership and the performance of nursing.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that it is necessary to develop strategies and applications to enhance nurses' empowerment for improved job satisfaction and nursing performance.

PURPOSE
This study was performed to investigate the effect of work environment on nursing performance and the effect of job satisfaction and empowerment on nurses performance in hemodialysis units.
METHODS
Participants in this study were 206 nurses from 22 hemodialysis units in local clinics, general and university hospitals in two metropolitan areas. The work environment, nursing performance, job satisfaction and empowerment of the participants were measured using four self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0.
RESULTS
Nursing performance correlated significantly with work environment, job satisfaction, and empowerment in the participants. Predictability of work environment for nursing performance was 28%. Job satisfaction and empowerment showed complete mediating effects, but not moderating effects in the relationship of work environment and nursing performance in the participants.
CONCLUSION
Findings indicate that work environment is an important variable affecting nursing performance in nurses in hemodialysis units and that job satisfaction and empowerment are mediating variables in the relationship of work environment and nursing performance in nurses in hemodialysis units. Improvements in the work environment are needed to induce the high job satisfaction and empowerment that can lead to improvement of nursing performance.

Effects of Head Nurses' Servant Leadership on Organizational Commitment among Clinical Nurses: Focused on the Mediating Effect of Empowerment

PURPOSE
This study was performed to identify the mediating effect of empowerment in the relationship between head nurses' servant leadership and organizational commitment among clinical nurses.
METHODS
A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 249 nurses was recruited from three hospitals located in J province, South Korea. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires, including general characteristics, servant leadership, empowerment, and organizational commitment. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and linear regression using the SPSS 22.0 program.
RESULTS
Head nurses' servant leadership perceived by clinical nurses significantly influenced their organization commitment. Empowerment partly mediated the effect of servant leadership on organizational commitment.
CONCLUSION
The findings suggest the importance of improving nurse managers' servant leadership and empowering nurses to increase their organizational commitment.

The Impact of Social Support and Self-esteem on Nurses' Empowerment

PURPOSE
This study was done to measure the level of social support, self-esteem, and empowerment and to identify any effect of social support and self-esteem on the empowerment of nurses.
METHODS
The study design was a descriptive survey using questionnaires which were given to 381 nurses in C province. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regressions.
RESULTS
The mean score for nurses' empowerment was 2.83+/-0.66. Seven individual characteristics, social support(family, meaningful persons, supervisors, and co-workers) and self-esteem accounted for 23.3% of the variance in nurses' empowerment. Prediction elements influencing empowerment of nurses were salary per month, self-esteem, and social support(supervisors).
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that it is necessary to increase nurses' empowerment. Social support by supervisors and self-esteem were confirmed as important factors to increase nurses' empowerment. In addition, raising the monthly average income would increase empowerment of nurses.

Effects of Empowerment and Job Satisfaction on Nursing Performance of Clinical Nurses

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to identify factors that affect nursing performance; Those factors are personal characteristics, sub-categories of empowerment and job satisfaction of clinical nurses.
METHODS
Data were collected from November 24, 2012 to March 11, 2013, and participants were 451 hospital nurses in 6 hospitals. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis.
RESULTS
Nurses who were older, married, highly educated, in the position of charge nurse, and with longer clinical careers showed relatively higher empowerment, higher job satisfaction, and higher nursing performance than others. Also, there were strong correlations between nursing performance and empowerment (r=.576)/job satisfaction (r=.617). Factors predicted nursing performance were relationship with coworkers (beta=.398), duty (beta=.181), promotion system (beta=.134), and turnover intention (beta=-.109). Factors predicting job satisfaction were competency of empowerment (beta=.249), and clinical career (beta=.151). These 6 factors explained 55.2% of the variance in nursing performance (F=93.37, <.001).
CONCLUSION
Regarding human resource management, relationship with co-workers is a changeable factor. Therefore nursing organizations should apply these factors in human resource management to enhance nursing performance and achieve organizational goals.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the roles of empowerment and emotional intelligence in the relationship between job embeddedness and turnover intension among general hospital nurses.
METHODS
The sample for this study consisted of 224 nurses from four general hospitals of less than 500 beds located in Seoul and Gyunggi Province. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression.
RESULTS
It was found that: (a) Job embeddedness and emotional intelligence had negative effects on turnover intension; (b) Emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between job embeddedness and turnover intension, but empowerment did not.
CONCLUSION
Findings indicate a need to reduce the degree of turnover by enhancing job embeddedness among general hospital nurses. Further research needs to be done to refine this study.

Effects of Organizational Culture, Self-Leadership and Empowerment on Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention in General Hospital Nurses

PURPOSE
In this study factors affecting job satisfaction and turnover intention of nurses were explored in the context of organizational culture, self-leadership, and empowerment.
METHODS
Participants were 286 nurses drawn from 3 general hospitals. Data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and hierarchial multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.
RESULTS
Significant differences in job satisfaction and turnover intention were found according to organizational culture types. Significant positive correlations were found between self-leadership, empowerment, task oriented organizational culture, relationship oriented organizational culture, innovation oriented organizational culture and job satisfaction. On the other hand, significant negative relationships were found between empowerment, relationship oriented organizational culture, innovation oriented organizational culture and turnover intention. The factors that enhance job satisfaction were found to be higher innovation-oriented organizational culture. Lower turnover intention was shown to be positively associated with relationship- or innovation oriented organization culture.
CONCLUSION
Innovation oriented organizational culture is needed in order to raise job satisfaction and reduce turnover intention of nurses.

Empowerment and Job Satisfaction among Clinical Nurses in South Korea: Systematic Review

PURPOSE
To synthesize and identify the studies that delineated the relationship between empowerment and job satisfaction in clinical nurses in Korea.
METHODS
Electronic databases were searched, including KmBase, KoreaMed. riss4u, National Assembly Digital Library and National Discovery for Science Leaders (NDSL) The search terms included nurse, satisfaction and empowerment. Only papers published in Korean were included.
RESULTS
Twelve studies, from 156 references screened, were included the final analysis. All studies were non-experimental and used correlational analysis. A significant positive relationship between structural or psychological empowerment and job satisfaction was found. Older nurses with longer clinical experience and higher education background were more likely to have high level of structural and psychological empowerment and job satisfaction.
CONCLUSION
The study results indicate that to produce an empowering work environment, nurse managers have to create a supportive organizational culture, and provide access to resources and opportunity as well as to strengthen emotional support.

PURPOSE
The purposes of this study were to analyze the mediating effects of empowerment, job stress, organizational commitment and relation-oriented nursing organization culture on turnover intention of clinical nurses.
METHODS
Participants selected for the final analysis were 382 nurses working in 4 general hospitals. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics Pearson correlation analysis (SPSS/WIN 17.0), and Path analysis (AMOS 18.0).
RESULTS
The study results are as follows: relation-oriented nursing organizational culture had no direct effect but had an indirect effect on nurses' turnover intention through empowerment, job stress, and organizational commitment, while job stress and organizational commitment had direct effects on turnover intention. The results also showed that empowerment had strong effect on organizational commitment, but job stress had very weak effect. Empowerment had an effect on turnover intention.
CONCLUSION
These results indicate that establishment of relation-oriented nursing organization culture is imperative if clinical nurses' turnover intention is to be decreased.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of empowerment on nursing performance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intention in hospital nurses.
METHODS
The subjects were 345 nurses at a general hospital in D city. Data were collected by structured questionnaire from January 10 to February 15, 2009. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression by SPSS win 17.0 program.
RESULTS
The mean scores were 3.60(+/-.43) of empowerment, 3.80(+/-.38) of nursing performance, 3.49(+/-.55) of job satisfaction, 4.70(+/-.74) of organizational commitment, and 2.34(+/-.84) of turnover intention. Empowerment was correlated with nursing performance, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment positively, but correlated with turnover intention negatively. As a result of multiple regression, empowerment has 34.3% of the explanatory power on nursing performance, 24.0% on job satisfaction, 30.7% on organizational commitment, and 15.6% on turnover intention.
CONCLUSION
Empowerment was a critical variable affecting nursing job performance, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover. Also, if various variable - active and adequate child-care support system, provided conditions continue to study, and adequate and appropriate compensation for nursing performance - affecting empowerment are managed, nurses' empowerment level will rise at the same time.

Influence of Nursing Organizational Culture on Empowerment as Perceived by New Nurses

PURPOSE
This study was done to identify the effect of nursing organizational culture on empowerment as perceived by new clinical nurses.
METHODS
For the objective a sample of 175 new nurses from secondary/tertiary hospitals having not less than 250 beds located in B city was selected to complete a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficients and simultaneous multiple regression with the SPSS 14.0 software program.
RESULTS
As for nursing organizational culture as perceived by the respondent, relation-oriented culture had the highest average score (3.60+/-.63) out of a possible 5 points followed by hierarch-oriented culture, innovation-oriented culture and task-oriented culture with 3.45+/-.30, 3.19+/-.53 and 3.05+/-.46, respectively. The respondents' level of perceived empowerment was 3.06+/-.41. The factors influencing empowerment according to nursing organizational culture were innovation-oriented and relation-oriented culture in that order. These 2 variables were statistically significant predictors and explained 48.6% of the variance in empowerment.
CONCLUSIONS
The results of this study indicate that emphasis should be given to nursing organizational culture strengthened by innovationoriented and relation-oriented culture, rather than task-oriented and hierarch-oriented culture, in order to foster harmonious empowerment among nurses at all levels.

Effects of the Mentoring Program as a Strategy for Retention of Clinical Nurses

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a mentoring program as a strategy for the retention of clinical nurses.
METHOD
Research subjects were 20 mentors, 20 mentees and 22 clinical nurses for a control group of mentees. A mentoring program was developed by an expert committee and applied to the experimental group for six months. Data were collected at three and six months after the application of the program from September, 2008 to March, 2009. Data were analyzed using chi-square-test, t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA, One-way ANOVA in SPSS/Win 15.0 Program.
RESULTS
Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, empowerment, and carrier commitment in the mentees of the experimental group were significantly higher than the nurses of the control group. Intention of resignation in mentees of the experimental group were significantly lower than the nurses of the control group. Also, there were significant interaction between the groups and the times of measurements in all variables.
CONCLUSION
The mentoring program showed positive impact on the variables for maintenance of clinical nurses. Recommendation: Based on these findings, retention strategies using mentoring programs were recommended to reduce clinical nurses' resignation and improve the competency of clinical nurses that leads to the productivity of nursing organizations.
