PURPOSE This was a correlational study to identify effects of perception of clinical ladder system on job satisfaction and intention to leave in perioperative nurses. METHODS Participants were 154 of perioperative nurses from larger general hospitals in Seoul. Data were collected from April, 16 to 22, 2013 using self-report questionnaires which included items on perception of clinical ladder system, job satisfaction, and intention to leave. Data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe? test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise regression. RESULTS The average mean score for perception of clinical ladder system was midline at 2.69 point out of 4 point. Perception of clinical ladder system correlated positively with job satisfaction (r=.38, p<.01) and negatively with intention to leave (r=-.88, p<.01). Perception of clinical ladder system was the factor which most influenced job satisfaction explaining 17.1% of the variance, also perception of clinical ladder system was the factor which most influenced intention to leave, explaining 12.7% of the variance. CONCLUSION Results of this study suggest that there is a need to enhance the perception of the clinical ladder system and to find ways to fulfill the expected effects for improving perioperative nurses' job satisfaction and reducing the intention to leave.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of practical communication strategies (PCS) on the reduction of AEs (Adverse Events) in pediatric cardiac ICU (PCICU). METHODS Intra-operative findings and care plans were documented and shared between staff members on a daily basis from the day of operation to the day of general ward transfer. Incidence of AEs was investigated in all patients who were admitted to the PCICU and was compared with incidence of AEs one year after establishment of PCS. RESULTS The study population consisted of 216 patients in pre-PCS group and 156 patients in post-PCS group. Incidence of readmission decreased from 6.0% (13/216) in pre-PCS group to 0.6% (1/156) in post-PCS group (chi2=7.23, p=.010). Incidence of other major complications decreased from 4.2% (9/216) to 0.6% (chi2=6.66, p=.012). Minor AEs such as intervention omission, order error, and protocol misunderstanding were reduced from 23.3 cases per 100 patient-days to 7.5 cases per 100 patient-days (chi2=20.31, p<.001). CONCLUSION Handover protocol is an effective strategy to reduce AEs for critically ill patients after pediatric cardiac surgery. Efforts to develop effective communication strategies should be continued and outcome research about communication strategies for patient safety should be further studied.
PURPOSE This study was done to apply failure mode & effect analysis (FMEA) to chemotherapy in order to reduce prescribing, dispensing and administering errors related to treatment and provide patients with a safe medical environment. METHODS A one group pre-post test design was used to verify the effects using the tool for FMEA in chemotherapy. RESULTS There was a statistically significant decrease in prescribing errors from 11.47% to 3.18%; administering errors decreased but they were not statistically significant. In a addition, there was no change in dispensing errors. CONCLUSION The results show that FMEA removed risk factors that might occur during the process of chemotherapy and that it was an effective tool for prevention of negligent accident occurring in actual patients.

PURPOSE The study was done to verify the effect size of the variables related to the emotional labor of nurses. METHODS A total of 47 article on variables related to the emotional labor of nurses and published from 2006 to 2014 were used for the meta-analysis. RESULTS Variables with the largest effect size related to emotional labor were identified as the variables of work task, organization and individual characteristics in descending order of effect size. The sub-factors with the greatest effect size in the work task variable were exhaustion and work commitment, while for organization variables, intention to change jobs had the largest effect size. For individual characteristics, physical symptoms had the largest effect size. CONCLUSION The results of this study are meaningful as the first study to integrate research results on variables related to the emotional labor of Korean nurses, providing practical data for the management of emotional labor.

PURPOSE This study was done to identify the status of smartphone addiction among nursing students and to examine the mediating effects of Internet ethics on the relationship between smartphone addiction, physical symptoms and psychological well-being. METHODS Data were collected between May 20 and June 23, 2014. Participants were a convenience sample of 214 nursing students of one university in Seoul. Structured questionnaires were used to measure degree of smartphone addiction, physical symptoms, psychological well-being and Internet ethics. Data was analyzed using Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple hierarchical regression. RESULTS Of the nursing students, 14.5% had high level of risk of smartphone addiction and 16.8% had potential risk. Higher frequency of physical symptoms and lower level of Internet ethics were related to the higher level of smartphone addiction. Voluntary-control in Internet ethics had mediating effects on the relationship between smartphone addiction and physical symptoms. CONCLUSION The results suggest that the level of smartphone addiction may lowered in nursing students by intensifying Internet ethics especially voluntary-control. Based on these findings, Internet ethics program for nursing students should be developed to facilitate the effective use of smartphones.

PURPOSE Purpose of the study was to investigate task performance, importance, knowledge, and level of job stress and job satisfaction of nurses working in a hospital with no family or family paid auxiliary caregivers. METHODS Participants were 119 nurses working in hospitals with no guardians. The questionnaire contained 488 items: general characteristics, performance, importance, knowledge of nursing tasks, job stress and job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/WIN 21.0. RESULTS Most frequently performed nursing tasks were patient nursing management and information management. Nursing tasks perceived as most important were medication and transfusion and nursing tasks with the highest knowledge were also medication and transfusion. Nursing task (subcategory) most frequently performed was oral medication. Nursing task (subcategory) perceived as most important was mental status observation and nursing task (subcategory) with the highest knowledge was vital sign check. Nurses' job stress was significantly associated with job satisfaction. The mean scores for nurses' job stress and job satisfaction were low. CONCLUSION The results indicate that nurses working in hospitals with no guardians perform daily living assistance services more often than previously, and nurses need to be prepared to do these tasks.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify moderating effects of work-family conflict in the relationship between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. METHODS A self report questionnaire survey was completed by 286 nurses working in five small or medium-sized hospitals in P city. Data were gathered during October, 2014 and analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. RESULTS Work-family conflict had significant moderating effects between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention of nurses working in small or medium-sized hospitals. Career commitment was the biggest factor in reducing turnover intention. CONCLUSION The results of the study indicate that work-family conflict and career commitment are important factors in turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. Therefore, to understand job and organizational career characteristics of nurses in small and medium hospitals, consideration must be given to the role of conflict in the nurses' workplace and homes. Support from the organization focusing on career development, and provision of an innovative system for the environment of small hospitals are needed.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the level of project perception for those nurses from research-driven hospitals and to analyze the effect of research-relevant performance in the health care field focusing on the mediated effect of research capacity and job satisfaction. METHODS Data were collected from June, 2014 to July, 2014, and participants were 106 research nurses in Research-driven hospitals. Descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, structural equation modeling (SEM). RESULTS As a result, Research-relevant performance according to project perception of research nurses from Research-driven Hospitals was not statistically significant, but research capacity and job satisfaction had a mediating role. Evaluation System Perception was significantly different from Research Capacity (p<.001), Research Capacity was significantly different from Job Satisfaction (p<.001), Job Satisfaction was significantly different from Research Performance (p<.001) CONCLUSION: The results indicate that research capacity building and job security research nurses are able to contribute to improving research performance of research-driven hospitals.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to the loyalty of Chinese customers who use Korean medical and tourism services. METHODS Participants were 158 Chinese who visited plastic surgery clinics in Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe? test, Pearson Correlation and Hierachical Multiple Regression. RESULTS Medical service quality, tourism service quality and medical and service satisfaction were positively correlated with customer loyalty. Medical service quality and medical and tourism service satisfaction had significant influence on customer loyalty. The explained variance for customer loyalty was 84.9%. CONCLUSION These results suggest the need to improve the tourism service and medical and tourism service satisfaction to retain loyal customers.

PURPOSE This study was done to identify the experiences of ethical issues and needs for ethics education in clinical nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was used and data were collected in 2013. Participants were 428 clinical nurses working in the general units of seven medical hospitals. The Ethical Issues in Clinical Practice Tool was used. Data analysis was performed using SPSS/WIN 19.0. RESULTS 'Providing care with a possible risk to your health' was the most frequent and disturbing ethical problems for nurses. The highest helpful ethical topic was 'the patients' right, autonomy and informed consent'. The ethical issue experience was significantly different according to education level, work units, and type of employment. The necessity of ethics education was statistically different according to age, religion, level of education, duration of working as RN, position, shift type, and continuing education about nursing ethics. CONCLUSION The results of this study show that nursing educators need to provide practical ethics education based on frequent ethical issues and helpful education topics. These findings can be used in developing effective education strategies for clinical nurses and nursing organizations to improve nurses' ethical decision-making abilities.
