Purpose This study aimed to identify factors influencing nursing professionalism among outpatient nurses. Methods Data were collected through a self-evaluation survey of 157 nurses from general and tertiary hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Importance-Performance Analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results The mean scores were as follows: importance, 3.29 out of 5; performance, 2.50 out of 4; role conflict, 3.23 out of 5; and nursing professionalism, 3.23 out of 5. There were statistically significant positive correlations between the importance (r=.32, p<.001) and performance (r=.38, p<.001) of nursing activities and professionalism. There were statistically significant negative correlations between role conflict and nursing professionalism (r=-.20, p=.014). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the importance of nursing activities, performance of nursing activities, role conflict, working department, and sex explained 33.0% of outpatient nurses’ professionalism (F=8.66, p<.001). Conclusion The findings indicate educational system about important and highly accomplished tasks would be useful to improve nursing professionalism of outpatient nurses. Furthermore, reducing role conflicts by clearly distinguishing tasks is necessary to increase nursing professionalism.

Purpose This conceptual analysis aimed to reveal the “role conflict of physician assistants with nursing licenses in Korea” by defining and organizing its concept. Methods This study used the conceptual analysis process of Walker and Avant. Results The role conflict of Korean physician assistant nurses can be defined by the following attributes: “Confusion of identity,” “Psychological burden of work,” “Anxiety and fear of legal responsibility,” “Anxiety about an uncertain future,” “Relative deprivation,” “Sense of neglect,” and a “Lack of sense of belonging.” The antecedents identified were: “unclear work boundaries,” “absence of work guidelines,” “excessive work and poor environment,” “Absence of regulations and administrative regulation,” “Exclusion from unfair treatment and promotion,” “Difficulty measuring job performance,” “Absence of job autonomy,” and “Physician group interest pursuit.” The consequences were: “Decreased job satisfaction,” “Decreased sense of achievement,” “Decreased self-esteem,” “Limited growth,” “Increased turnover intentions,” “Exhaustion of mind and body,” “Career identity crisis,” and “Frustrations.” Conclusion: This study provides basic data for constructing a theory concerning role conflict among Korean dedicated nurses and promotes the development of measurement tools. Furthermore, it meaningfully presents both theoretical grounds for reducing the role conflict of dedicated nurses and evidence for legalization.

Purpose This study explored and characterized the interpersonal conflict experiences among mid-career nurses working together. Methods Data were collected from May 2021 to February 2022 through individual in-depth interviews of eight mid-career nurses with conflict experience among nurse colleagues in their work place. The transcribed data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results Four categories were identified: experiencing discomfort in relationships as reverse discrimination; bearing the heavy burden of being pushed up and down; adopting self-rescue measures to cope with the current situation; and navigating a workplace where resignation and expectation coexist. Conclusion This study provided an in-depth exploration of interpersonal conflict experiences among mid-career nurses’ working together. Thus, shedding light on the need for proactive educational and policy initiatives to effectively manage and mitigate such conflicts among nurse colleagues in this career stage.
Purpose This study aimed to identify the impact of nursing organizational culture and nursing practice environment on generational conflict in organization among hospital nurses.
Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional design.
The participants consisted of 214 nurses working at two tertiary general hospitals, which were located in B city. Data were collected from January 15 to January 31, 2022, using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis using IBM/SPSS 28.0 for Windows.
Results: The mean generational conflict in organization was 2.60±0.74 points on a 5-point scale. Multiple regression indicated that the factors influencing generational conflict in organization included relation-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=-.29, p<.001), hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=-.29, p<.001), hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=.17, p=.006) and clinical career, and these variables explained 23.0% of generational conflict in organization.
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that it is necessary to improve relation-oriented nursing organizational culture and avoid hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture to decrease generational conflict in organization.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate the influence of role conflict, head nurses’ super leadership and nursing organizational culture on organizational commitment among male nurses.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 221 male nurses who had worked for more than six months in university hospitals, general hospitals, and clinics. Data were collected using structured, self-administered questionnaires on role conflict, head nurse super leadership, nursing organizational culture, and organizational commitment. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis, independent t-test, analysis of variance, Scheffé test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and regression analysis.
Results: Organizational commitment had a significant positive correlation with head nurse super leadership, innovation-oriented culture, and relation-oriented culture; however, it had a significant negative correlation with role conflict and task-oriented culture. Among the general characteristics, the significant factors influencing organizational commitment among male nurses were number of beds and departments. Furthermore, among the main variables, innovation-oriented culture, task-oriented culture, role conflict, and head nurse super leadership influenced organizational commitment.
Conclusion: To increase male nurses’ organizational commitment, it is necessary to create an innovative organizational culture, reduce role conflicts, and improve head nurse super leadership.

Purpose This study was done to analyze effects of leader-member exchange as perceived by nurses who returned to work after parental leave: conflict between work and family via job stress. Methods A cross-sectional study design was adopted and data were collected from 140 nurses. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program (descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis). Results Mean scores were 3.44±0.64 out of 5 for leader-member exchange, 3.45±0.59 out of 5 for job stress, and 2.82±0.80 out of 5 for conflict between work and family. The leader-member exchange had negative correlations with job stress (r=-.31, p=.003) and conflict between work and family (r=-.36, p<.001). The leader-member exchange had direct impacts on conflict between work and family (β=-.26, p=.002) and indirect via job stress (β=.35, p<.001). Job stress had partial mediating effects on relations between leader-member exchange and conflict between work and family (Z=-3.00, p<.001). The leader-member exchange and job stress explained 41% of the conflict between work and family. Conclusion The findings from this study indicate that active human resource management policies should be established in order to increase the leader-member exchange.

PURPOSE The present research was done to examine the fundamental significance and structure of conflict experience of nurses in hospital nursing organizations. METHODS This qualitative research was conducted by analyzing data collected through in-depth interviews based on Colaizzi's (1978) method of analysis, one of the phenomenological methods of analysis. RESULTS Statements from the 12 study participants demonstrate two key topics “accumulation of conflicts†and “manifestation of new conflicts†as well as seven sub-topics including “being forced to complyâ€, “Lack of respect and considerationâ€, “unsatisfactory conflict management by the leadersâ€, “continuous and overwhelming vicious cycleâ€, “prevalence of self-defensive egotismâ€, “difficult to accept differencesâ€, and “incapable of responding to the structural changes of nursing workforceâ€. CONCLUSION Resolving the dysfunctional conflicts in hospital nursing organizations requires not only improvement in the organizational culture of individuals and nursing organizations, but also legal and institutional measures in addition to new attempts to integrate education and research findings from relevant fields of studies.

PURPOSE The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between types of conflict management style, role conflict, professional autonomy and organizational commitment of hospital nurses, and to identify factors influencing organizational commitment. METHODS Participants were 165 conveniently selected nurses from one general hospital in Gangwon province. Data were collected from March 28 to April 6, 2018 using self-report questionnaires. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the level of professional autonomy and organizational commitment depending on the nurses' styles of conflict management. A statistically significant positive correlation between professional autonomy and organizational commitment was found, and a negative correlation between environmental barriers in role conflict and organizational commitment. Participants' professional autonomy and environmental barriers in role conflict explained 17.9% of organizational commitment. CONCLUSION These finding indicate that professional autonomy and environmental barriers are both very important factors influencing organizational commitment. Accordingly, it is necessary to improve nurses' organizational commitment, enhance autonomy and reduce environmental barriers for nurses performing nursing roles.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between gender role conflict for men in nursing, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. METHODS The study data were collected between August 1 and September 1, 2015 from 225 men in nursing currently working in 36 Korean general hospitals, each with ≥100 beds. Frequency and percentages were analyzed, and Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's test were used. RESULTS There was no significant difference in gender role conflict based on the general characteristics of the men. In contrast, significant differences in gender role conflict were found in association with the following job-related characteristics: work experience at the present hospital, work department, work unit, and type of work. A significant negative correlation was detected between male gender role conflict and job satisfaction, a positive correlation was found between male gender role conflict and turnover intention. CONCLUSION In order to increase job satisfaction and decrease the turnover intention of men in nursing, measures to reduce gender role conflict are needed.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to identify the influence of professionalism, role conflict and work environment in clinical nurses with expanded role (CNE) on job embeddedness. METHODS The participants in this study were 136 CNE working in general hospitals in Seoul, the wider metropolitan area and Gangwon Province. RESULTS Job embeddedness, work environment and professional performance of the participants showed positive correlation with each other. Significant predictors of embeddeness were belief in public service and sense of calling in the professional subcategory and participation in hospital affairs and nurse-doctor relationship in the work environment subcategory. CONCLUSION Finding from this study indicate the need to evaluate and improve the significant predictors of job embeddedness for CNE.

PURPOSE The present study was aimed to examine the degree of nurses' emotional labor and occupational stress and demonstrate the moderating and mediating effects of work-family conflict in the relationship among emotional labor, occupational stress, turnover intention of nurses. METHODS The participants for this study were 307 nurses currently working in two general hospitals in G city in Korea. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS It turned out that work-family conflict plays an important role in the relationship among emotional labor, occupational stress, turnover intention of nurses. CONCLUSION Therefore, to reduce nurses' turnover intention, it is necessary to have an intervention focusing on work-family conflict. Also, it is necessary for both the government and hospitals to establish a supportive system and a program to relieve nurses from their work-family conflict.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify moderating effects of work-family conflict in the relationship between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. METHODS A self report questionnaire survey was completed by 286 nurses working in five small or medium-sized hospitals in P city. Data were gathered during October, 2014 and analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. RESULTS Work-family conflict had significant moderating effects between job, organizational, career characteristics and turnover intention of nurses working in small or medium-sized hospitals. Career commitment was the biggest factor in reducing turnover intention. CONCLUSION The results of the study indicate that work-family conflict and career commitment are important factors in turnover intention among nurses working in small and medium-sized hospitals. Therefore, to understand job and organizational career characteristics of nurses in small and medium hospitals, consideration must be given to the role of conflict in the nurses' workplace and homes. Support from the organization focusing on career development, and provision of an innovative system for the environment of small hospitals are needed.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify moderating and mediating effects of social support in the relationship between work-family conflict, job satisfaction and turnover intention among married women nurses. METHODS The sample for this study consisted of 225 married female nurses from two hospitals located in Seoul. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with the SPSS 21.0 program. RESULTS (a) Social support of married female nurses had significant moderating and mediating effects between work-family conflict and job satisfaction. (b) Social support of married female nurses had significant moderating and mediating effects between work-family conflict and turnover intention. CONCLUSION The results of the study indicate that social support is an important factor in work-family conflict, job satisfaction and turnover intention among married female nurses. Supervisor support is important to married nurses as social support as it is controlled by the organization. Therefore, supportive relationships based on mutual respect between supervisors and nurses are necessary for a creative organizational atmosphere and system.

PURPOSE This study was done to investigate the effects of university hospital nurses' organizational conflict between organizational commitment and labor union commitment, so as to provide data on prevention of conflict with the hospital and to improve work achievement with commitment of two different groups: hospital and labor union commitment. METHODS Data collection was conducted from May 15 to 31, 2011 for nurses registered in the labor union of a university hospital. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and multiple regression. RESULTS Organizational commitment of the nurses showed significant differences according to age, position and work experience, and degree of labor union commitment according to academic achievement. The factors affecting labor union commitment were organizational conflict and recognition of need for labor union, which accounted for 19% of the variance. Factors affecting organizational commitment were organizational conflict, recognition of need for labor union, participation in organizational events, and renewal of membership in the union, which accounted for 33% of the variance. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that there is a need to improve work achievement by minimizing conflict and preventing labor disputes for better organizational commitment and labor union commitment of nurses.
